Title: I have an announcement
Post by: NickyTaylorphoto on November 09, 2012, 10:42:29 pm
After a very lengthy forum thread started by myself last month on which camera to purchase. I can gladly say I can now play amongst the big boys as the new camera Pentax 645D arrived this morning. I only have the 35mm manual focus lens at the moment as I will use it for landscape but I hope to buy the 120 macro and the 80-160 auto focus just to keep the options available.

All your help really did go a long way to helping me decide and while yes the D800e would have probably been all I NEEDED, it was not however all I WANTED  :D

So hopefully now I will be allowed to post in the medium format Forum with all of you lot.

That is all …

YAY!

Congrats on your new camera.

I may join you in the Pentax customers if V2 has a usable live view. :)

Cheers,
Bernard

Felt the same when I finally got it.  No camera ever got me so excited.  Almost too powerful of a tool.  There is a ton of great accessories on ebay and at KEH's.

It is a lovely camera, but what about it makes it "almost too powerful of a tool"?

A local dealer for a competitive brand suggested that the Pentax645
only captures in 12 bit and not 14/16 like other medium format options.

Regardless of whether this capture difference is visible does anyone know
if this is,indeed, fact (that the pentax is12bit)

Hello,

The Pentax 645 does shot 14bit.

No camera can shot 16bit it is a marketing lie if a MFB manufacture says there device does so.

I felt the same when mine arrived in December 2010; I haven't been that excited about opening a box since I was a child on Christmas day.  Surprisingly, the Pentax web store shipped it without signature required for delivery, so it sat outside my front door for hours; I wonder if they still ship that way - seems a bit risky.

Typical dealer bull s#@t. I've heard all sorts of things.

The Pentax 645D shoots to 14bit files.

Phase and Hasselblad use 16 bit files, but that does not mean that the sensor can capture 16bit.

It's interesting that the Nikon D800 has a higher dynamic range than MF backs yet it uses 14 bit files.

I bet the dealer for the competitive brand failed to mention that the Pentax is far superior in other ways,
such as metering and autofocus.

I love my Pentax 645D. I also have a D800, which is nice, but a bit of a brick. But it is the Pentax I reach for.
