Title: Seeking Gustavus and Alaska Glacier park Advice
Post by: hilljf on June 23, 2012, 01:08:52 pm
I will be visiting Alaska in early August and for part of my trip I plan to say in Gustavus, near Glacier Bay National park.   I would appreciate any advice on best way to get some good photography in the region.

Are there any outfits that provide a day trips into the park or Glarcier area?

Thanks in advance for any sugestions you can provide.

John

You really want to get on the water to see the landscape and the glaciers from that perspective. Also, the Glacier Bay National Park offices near the entrance to the bay has some very nice walking trails with many photo-worthy trees, bogs, trees, etc.

I totally agree you need to get on the water.  There are tours there.  Go as early in the day as you can.

I'd recommend both a flight seeing tour for nice aerials of the area as well as a kayak tour and/or power boat tour for more intimate, sea level views.  Kayaking, while a beautiful adventure (given the right weather), can be arduous and time consuming while a tour boat will provide easy, fast access to the glaciers and various photogenic spots.

I have experience renting kayaks from these folks and can recommend them:

Here are a couple good general resources:

While in Gustavus, I'd also recommend a whale watching tour to Point Adolphus either by kayak or power boat.

Cheers and have fun!
