Title: Polarizing Filter for H4D?
Post by: evgeny on May 07, 2012, 05:13:37 am
Hi,

I'm looking for a good polarizing solution for my H4D-40 system.
Which do you recommend?

- Hasselblad 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter (Mfr # 53486)
- Heliopan 77mm High-Transmission Circular Polarizing Multi-Coated Filter (Mfr #707761)
- Zeiss 77mm CZ T* Circular Polarizing Filter (Mfr# 000000-1934-120)

A local Hasselblad dealer suggested the Zeiss filter. I heard that Zeiss CP is hard to clean. Zeiss CP is cheaper than Hasselblad and Heliopan by approx $100. I'm not sure where Zeiss CP is made and if it is good for MFD lenses. What about Heliopan vs Hasselblad CP?

Thanks
Evgeny

Get the one with the best anti-glare coating. Heliopan or B + W are great.

Thank you for the reply.

I found that the Hasselblad CP is not Multi-Coated according to spec, and Zeiss filter is likely not built to the Zeiss high standards.

I will buy Heliopan CP. I use Heliopan neutral filters on my Sinar M lenses and they are of highest quality.

Thanks
Evgeny

I have the 77mm versions of B&W, Heliopan, and the Hasselblad. I note that the B&W and Heliopan are a tad more cyan. The Hasselblad version seems more neutral in color. This is according to my eyes looking at my files.
I've now increased in size to the 95mm, purchasing only the Hasselblad filter.

Heliopan makes very very good filters, but personally I prefer B+W (which are made by schneider) and think they are absolutely the best. They make them in slim mounts as well, with a bunch of different coating options. Slim mounts are obviously better for vignetting at wide ends and just in general if you are stacking filters or anything...

Hi Brian

can you recommend this one B+W 77mm Kaesemann XS-Pro Circular Polarizer MRC Nano Filter (B&H # BWKCPXSP77) for Hasselblad lenses 50mm II and 100mm ?

Thanks
Evgeny

I haven't used it with those lenses (btw I'm jealous you have the 100mm 2.2 that is one of the few lenses I genuinely miss from my H3Dii-39ms days) I'm excited to get it back on an S2 soon! Yes this is the filter I have for most of my lenses. It is great finish wise and if you ask me you won't be disappointed with the results. The XS is for the slim and then the rest of the stuff is all about their coatings and what not. Personally I believe its the best out there and use it on everything from my D3s/D4 - IQ180. Since putting anything "extra" in front of the glass is always going to suck light and effect image quality in some way, I personally think that filters are one of the most essential areas to not "skimp" in when your putting them in front of the best sensors.
