I had high hopes for the area but I got much less out of it

I would not be so disappointed.  Very is a place in the gallery for quiet — not everything needs to shout.

I've made a lot of "messes" with too many details showing when I forget to check what aperture I'm using. I think a shallower DOF would have helped.

I don't know if the DOF would have helped, they were few elements in the same plane and quite spread across the frame.

In all your photos, the original post and today's included, everything is important. Nothing stands out as being the most important element. Even your photo of the 2 clumps of grasses looks disjointed to me; I'm referring to the cropped-looking version. Somehow, without including all the detail, those two clumps need to be "grounded" somehow since I'm sure those clumps are not free-floating.
