From those with experience in this lens system,which manual focus Mamiya 645 lenses
could hold their own on a current 40 MP sensor.
I have am opportunity to get hold of a Leica S2 at a steal and don't really want to spoil the
'deal' aspect by having to buy the bulk of the systems lenses at $7K-$8K a pop.
From normal on up, I have to assume the 120 macro,200 2.8 ED,and 300 2.8 ED should be
up to the task. Safe assumption?
Will be pretty well,exclusively, used locked down on tripod,mirror up,etc so handhold-ability
not a major priority.

I didn't realize there was a Lecia to Mamiya adapter.
Over the past 6 years I have used the 35mm, 45mm and 50mm Shift. I found the 35mm very good, the 45mm lacking and the 50mm shift excellent. These were all used on a P45+ on various 645 bodes. I have also heard good things about the 105-210 Manual focus lens and the 300mm APO F2.8. BTW there is a 300 on ebay right now.

I have them what do you really want to know. I used them all. What's the real question you have. I carry 13 lenses with me at all times. And yes I'm a gluten for punishment. I have the 500 app also. But what a bitch to move around. Very large and heavy but great sharp lens. What are you trying to do. T

I cannot recommend the 35mm, I sold mine. 120 macro is superb, as is 105-210mm (if you remove CA). Love the 50mm shift too. All used with a Phase One P45 39 megapixel.
I now also use the Schneider Digitar lenses on a Cambo Wide DS - now you're talking!

the 50mm shift is REALLY good
I think the 35mm is the same formula as the AF ? if it is it is not a very good lens,
actually I would say, slightly below average from a professional's point of view.
The 120 macro is another REALLY good lens.

My favorite lens is the Mamiya 300mm f/2.8 APO that I just bought for use on my IQ180, and I can say that any lens in this series 150mm 2.8, 200mm 2.8 APO, 300mm 2.8 APO and the 500 all preform amazingly well, I only currently own the 300mm, but it handles 80mp perfectly, and would certainly handle the Leica S2 perfectly as well. I think all of the Mamiya glass would work great, I assume the S2 has focus confirmation, and I know that all the C/N Mamiya glass works amazingly well for precise manual focus.

Is there an astonishing amount of difference between the 300mm f5.6 ULD and the 300mm f4.5 APO? There is an astonishing price difference between them. Is the APO lens more weather-sealed?

The 300mm f/4.5 APO is an AF lens, similar to Nikon's "G" series in that it does not have a manual aperture ring. The adapters which Leica has made are for lenses like the C and N Mamiya lenses which have a manual aperture ring because the adapters don't have electronic contacts. The 300mm f/5.6 is VERY compact, and has ultra-low dispersion elements (ULD) going in its favor so, it too should be a stunning preformed. They also make a 500mm lens which has the manual aperture (not the 4.5 APO but another one) which sells pretty cheap on ebay and I think has some great quality. I am going to purchase both of these lenses for testing. I am working up to doing a Mamiya 300mm lens shootout using the 4.5, 2.8 APO, and 5.6 to see how they all preform.

Paul,the adapter I've picked up is not one of the Leica products but one produced by Metabones
Tim, what I'm trying to do is look at my options for making an S2 purchase affordable by rounding
out a system with third party lenses.
Since I'm not too familiar with the Mamiya 645 system from a user standpoint I want to avoid
picking up those lenses which don't have a good reputation.
Whether pairing them with the S2 is a practical choice is something I'll have to come to
terms with but the camera body itself is very 'addictive' to use and the ergonomics work,for me, in
that it gets away from some of the MF clunkiness that I,personally,experience with other
camera platforms.
End use will be,primarily, for print output in the 16x20 to 30x40 range

all have good reputations and of course all the later Hasselblad lenses do as well....

If you need a 35mm and you can get a Pentax 645 adapter, the Pentax 645 manual 35mm is very good. It does flare a bit pointing into the sun and a little CA, which is easy to fix, but it is nice and sharp. I use it on a Pentax 645D.

I know this is slightly off topic, but I have just purchase a Mamiya 645/Nikon adaptor so I can mount my Mamiya 645 50mm shift lens on a Nikon D3x.
Looking forward to seeing the results.

I use various lenses on a 22mp back, the 55mm has always been listed as their best WA lens so I was surprised to not see it mentioned.
The 45mm I have is excellent with this back. The 35mm is terrible, edges smudge and stopped down all the details get lost, so on a 39mp back I can't imagine!
My standard kit is the 45mm, 80mm, 120mm and 150mm f2.8 to take with me, other lenses I own that are great are the 24mm, 55mm, 50mm shift.
