Title: Lone Penguin in Snowstorm - Antarctica
Post by: Josh-H on April 04, 2012, 08:26:41 am
I haven't posted anything in a while and just felt like sharing. Shot from the deck of the Ocean Nova in a driving snow storm. A higher resolution version can be seen on my website (http://www.jholko.com)

Like this...it has captured the dangerous element of what might lie beneath, blue tones are lovely...fascinating image well done.

Very impressive!

This image demands attention.
The contrasts of colour and tone are magnificent.
Equally compelling are the various moods expressed as one moves around in this image.

I assume this image may well translate into commercial success as well.

What Tony says.
I keep coming back to this one and it grows on me even more each time.

Love this image as is, but if it were mine, I would crop just a little tighter (off the top and right) and brighten the foreground iceberg just a smidgeon to make it very slightly "glow" (but no HDR-style halos, though!!). Do you happen to have the same scene but closer and lower? I know, I'm asking for a lot, but just in case...  ;)

Thanks for the thoughts. Cropping the image tighter destroys the context IMO. This is about the critter in the hostile environment around it and it needs space to keep context. The glow is lost in the jpeg because the colour clips outside of the SRGB colour space. Its all there in print :-)

Thanks Tony. I will probably include this as part of a new exhibition in planning at the moment.  ;D

I wish you every success with the upcoming exhibition.
If the rest of the images are that sort of quality it should be a cracker.

Kind Regards

Tony Jay

Cropping the image tighter destroys the context IMO.

I take your point about cropping and the context. But I would have to say that for me the other icebergs vaguely visible in the background do act as a distraction. Either way, a wonderful image.

Nice shot, but how is that a 'hostile environment' to a penguin, a creature native to and perfectly adapted to that area?

STUNNING work throughout your site, really really great work man!  What you've shown here is just the tip of the iceburg!

Very nice, those penguins are perfect to give a sense of the dimensions.
