Title: Should I save metadata to image files before converting catalog to LR4?

Is there any reason why I should do a save metadata to my files (jpeg, dng, tiff) before converting the catalog to LR4?

None that occurs to me. Just open the existing catalogue: LR4 will make a copy (with "-2" appended to the name) and convert it to its own format. The original remains untouched.

Completely up to you, but as Jeremy said, LR$ will create a new catalog, leaving your LR3.x catalog untouched, and it will read the metadata from the 3.x catalog, the files, or both, so as long as you have the metadata in the catalog you'll be fine.

Not a bad idea!
