I know that Lightroom 4 does not do hdr directly and you end up exporting to another program, but here is an interesting observation from Christian Block about Lightroom 4 and the ability to recover highlights can lead to some reduction in the highlights after merging. I have not tried this but I thought I would see if anyone else has noticed this or not. Here is the post from his blog: HDR labs blog (http://www.hdrlabs.com/news/index.php?id=1276328416487110799)

Guess you don't read the Lightroom forum much huh? Already talked about in this thread (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=63239.0) and Christian has already posted on the thread.

Actually you can do an HDR-like** process directly in Lightroom with Enfuse. Quite nice too.

** due to the lengthy debate here a few months ago about what is and isn’t “HDR” I’m going to preface the comment as HDR-Like to protect myself <g>
