Hi Folks

It would be nice to know what you think of this one.

Thanks
William

I like the cloud and I like the field in the foreground. But there isn't enough tonal separation between the line of trees and the dark hills behind them.

I kind of liked the lack of separation. It provides some structure in that area. Nice cloud!

It's a great cloud. But I have the feeling that the photo would be better if the cloud were threatening something; and there's nothing there to threaten.

I have lots of folders with just cloud images. I use them constantly to supply better skies for other images. I'd put this one in that category.

Wow, I can't believe that cloud...is that real?  I agree with popnfresh, I would prefer the tree line either higher or lower.  The way it is now without any separation it looks like the tree line has a crew cut or something, to me.  Thanks for posting.

Thanks pop

I see what you mean...I did lighten those trees up - will see if I can increase it!

Thanks to all for your comments.

Yup, that's a great cloud all right!  The rest doesn't do much for me.

I like it. Having the trees blend into the land doesn't bother me, because what I see is the endless, beautiful monotony of the land below contrasting with the splendor of the towering clouds. I think it would be even better with the trees gone.

Odd, but it looks to me as if that cloud was never there; there's something about the scale/angle that doesn't feel right. The lighting just looks as if it were several different pictures. Guess it's what comes of having a budding lawyer in the family.

Hi Rob

No. No "Rain Forest" tricks here! That is how it was.

I would have like to bring the shed on the left more into the picture but could not do it without trespassing.

This is another picture taken a little further down the road that same afternoon.

For my money, this is a better shot than the first one. The tonal values are a little flat, but they can be easily tweaked.

I think your second shot has a lot going or it, maybe b/w could be tried? Ditto the first one, but then I always did prefer b/w to colour for these things...

As Pop says, there's a lot that can be tweaked, one way or the other.

The main thing is to keep shooting when the opportunities arise; that way, you get more things to work with and enjoy. Might be frustrating, but the rewards pay well personally when you do! That's the only reason I continue with cameras, come to think of it.

Mmmm, not sure, I think you must have made the cloud with cotton wool and stuck it on with tape.

Interesting observation:

I am originally South African but live in Australia now.
Seeing these two shots and knowing where they were taken has a much different effect on me than the other contributors.
It is true I suppose that an emotional response really can change ones impression.

BTW I feel that relatively small tonal manipulation could make both images really special.

Thank you for sharing your vision

Kind regards

Tony Jay

You are not the Tony Jay who was on the radio, are you?

Is there someone in the world on radio who shares my name?

It isn't me but I am interested to know where we are talking about.

Here in South Africa. Springbok Radio in the old days before TV. Very smooth voice. (I'm sure it was Tony Jay!??)

Sorry! I see he died in 2006!

Fortunately I am still alive and kicking!

I do remember Springbok Radio well though I was only a little fellow back then.
Don't remember anyone who was my namesake though.

The fascinating things one learns!

Indeed, when I lived in India there was a radio station called Radio SEAC beamed out of Ceylon; working on it was David Jacobs who later went on to become a poular DJ and eventually one of the very top directorial dogs on the BBC! He always did have a smooth voice.

Acorns, oaks.

P.S. Glad you're still alive.
