Title: noise canon 40D
Post by: lorenzettifoto on March 07, 2012, 04:58:56 pm
Do not know if this is the section for my question:
Waiting to buy Canon 7D now photographer with a Canon 40D.
development in camera raw my images and are quite noisy and I can not get settings to eliminate this problem.
I've seen on this site pictures taken with the same camera without this problem, can anyone help me to improve the quality?

What ISO? What software are you using to process? LR3/4 and ACR 6 can do an excellent job of noise reduction if you have the correct settings...

I have a couple of 40D cameras, and the noise reduction tools in Lightroom do a pretty good job. ISO 1600 is very good, and 3200 prints nicely. What are you using to process the raw files?

You are most likely underexposing your files. Try expose-to-the-right method.

I agree, unless you have a problem with your camera.  Expose to the Right, as described elsewhere on this forum, process in ACR 6 or LR 3/4 and you can produce some very nice images at 1600 and 3200.  Not as noise free as newer cameras, but pretty good.  ETTR really makes a difference with a 40D.

when shooting in Raw +1 EV, then work with ACR 4.4 factor: 45, range: 0.8, detail 60, masking: 0 for white balance correction landscapes of blacks increased, increasing the contrast very little at this point I'm going to photoshop.
I realized that my ISO 100 images are too noisy compared to others using the same camera, my style is to make the image more dramatic than usual, but a noise so strong it seems very strange

A couple of things:

Working with ACR 4.4, I believe that's the older process version (2003 version?) -- the more recent ACR and Lightroom offer a Process 2010 that significantly improves noise reduction. It made a HUGE difference in files from my 40D and my m4/3 cameras.

+1 EV suggests that your files are underexposed by a stop. Pushing the exposure like this can add noise especially to the shadows.

Your sharpening settings are sharpening whatever noise might be there. Masking allows you to restrict the sharpening to edges, and not sharpen large flat areas like the sky. You can see the effect by holding down the Option key and moving the Masking slider while viewing at 100%. You might try Detail at 100% and bring Masking up until the large flat areas aren't affected. And possibly back off the Amount a little.

What are your Noise Reduction settings, if any?

then upgraded version 6.6
I then improved by increasing the masking to +25 during shooting 1stop overexpose, so the noise is gone by 50%, thank of the advice
