The day we have been waiting for!

Yep, just buying it now. I'm a little concerned because the beta was so sluggish I just couldn't do much with it, so I was hoping for a Beta 2 (which they have done with at least one other release) ...
Interesting ... if click "try" to download, from Adobe's website, it downloads version 3. Have to try it from the LR 4 update window ...
-
I really don't think you'll find it slow, Wayne. It's fine on my system, which is a little old (pending an IvyBridge upgrade soon).
-

"Try" seems to be getting LR4 for me, whereas the buy the upgrade button does nothing. I will give Adobe my money as soon as they are ready to take it.
-
If you buy the upgrade the buy button is disabled until you click the popup to tell it what version you are upgrading from (took me a while to figure that out).
-
Click the upgrade worked for me however when I went to checkout it said I had to ring them. I hope it's not because I dont live in the US.
I have temporarily given up.
-
Check RAW compatibility: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.html
Interesting: it already supports Canon 1DX and Nikon D800 (no 5D3, still).

Dave - the Adobe NZ Shop is listing LR4 in AUD. AUD pricing and USD pricing are not an exact exchange rate match (well, not even close). My guess is that if you're trying to buy from the Adobe US shop that it won't let you - you need to go to adobe.com/nz/ click on the link "buy" and then specify the NZ shop and then choose LR4.
It's still much cheaper than LR3 was, but a little more expensive than the US version (which really reflects the cost of business in Australia and New Zealand, providing local support, and so forth).
-
However, no Camera Raw 7 to go with yet? Limits some things?
-

yes, much better. moving sliders in develop works fine.
Still not sure why I get the "loading" message every single time I move to a new picture with my IQ180 files in develop module. Even if I move from one to the next and then back it has to "load" again - was hoping v4 would improve on that, but actually seems slightly slower. I have to wait about 4 to 5 seconds every time I move to a new image in Develop.
It does appear the fix Eric mentioned for the color issues with the IQ180 files did make it into the release ... much better.
-
I'm going to buy it within minutes, however, do you think there could be any free upgrade for those who bought it Lr3 in the last days?
I got it for half the price in order to save money with the upgrade. It seems that I went wrong and I'll be paying 40€ more. :(
-

yeah, I like to open in PS as smart objects, can't do that for now. Interesting Adobe Labs just released ACR 6.7 RC today ... hope we see 7.0 soon.
-
@mac_paolo: Don't think so. Update to a new version for free is an option for those buying an Adobe product *after* the official announcement of the new product version. Doesn't work for LR 4, sorry: No delay between announcement and availability.
But I'm not a Adobe employee. Contact sales support staff.
Ciao, Walter

Thanks Farmer ,
Went via the 'NZ' shop and paid Aussie $$. After four tries I got there in the end. :)

Good stuff, Dave!
Wayne - have you fully upgraded/optimised/etc your catalog and let it rebuild everything?
How is it compared to Beta when moving back and forth?
-
Hi,
It works now. It seems Adobe lagged in updateing their web site...

Yes, the difference is relatively defensible compared to some I encounter (Canon ink at twice the price, for example).

Yes, no one in their right mind buys Canon ink from Canon in Australia. At over $1400 to re-ink a 6350 in Australia vs. B&H shipped to my door for under $800 its a no brainer... ;D
Returning to our regular Lightroom 4 Programming.... (which is downloading as I type) ;D
-
On the Adobe site though they refer to the LR4 "upgrade", on the shopping cart it still offers you LR3 :D
On a cross related note I was asking here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=62932.0 about tablet to view the LR tutorials, has anyone had experience to offe especially in regard to using the BlackBerry Playbook???
-
Got mine! I was pleasantly surprised by the upgrade price, actually expected it to be more (shhhh)!
-
I have to wait until the LuLa LR4 tutorial files are finished downloading! ;D
-

It's better than the beta, but the improvement is performance is disappointing. Still not really the 'real time' process LR3.6 was here.
Compared to previous upgrades of LR, the only unexpected treat of the release version over the beta is the low price, but I'd have preferred it to cost twice as much and be as fast as 3.6 myself.

For now, the version of ACR that offers rendering compatibility with Lr 4 is the Release Candidate (RC) of 6.7. As noted above, this was also released earlier today.
-
One quick question for all the early birds; did you delete the LR4 beta prior to installing LR4 or does the final version simply install over the beta? Thanks in advance.
Alan

After a comprehensive backup, I just did a straight install. As suggested earlier (and has been the practice in the past) it removes the beta, but leaves previous versions intact. It picks up all previous presets, collections, plug-ins and configuration options, I wish all software upgrades were this slick.
It's all gone perfectly well so far. No ugly surprises yet.
-
This may be a silly question, but is there anything in the new LR4 that wasn't in the beta?
-

ACR 6.7 release candidate has announced WITH 5D3 support.

I am waiting for ACR7 actually.

Not as much as in previous LR betas. A full list is at

Hmmm. The trial didn't pick up the presets. Is that just the trial? When I buy will it include my presets from LR3?
-

I can't say, although I'm sure someone here will know the answer.
It may depend on how/where you store presets, plug-ins etc.
-
I very recently bought lightroom 3 for $80, thinking I would save $120 by upgrading to Lightroom 4 for $99. Now that they have cut the price of the new software substantially, I will end up paying $10 more! Go figure. Oh, well it is still worth it.
-
I have a question. If time was not a concern, what would be the best practice of moving images from LR3 to 4 if your goal was to maximize IQ?
-
Top Tip: Don't rush to buy upgrade.
Instead, download trial version and wait a couple of weeks to see how much discount Amazon offer.
Then it is a simple case of buying the upgrade from Amazon and entering the registration key into the trial version opening screen.
-
At the moment it's cheaper to buy the boxed product shipped to you direct from Adobe, rather than either buying the download from Adobe or buying from Amazon. Rather odd that shipping the box is cheaper than emailing you a serial number.

You do understand you don't move images - you just open your catalogue in LR. Images processed in LR3 will still have LR3 adjustments and a little exclamation mark which you click if you want to update their adjustments to LR4's "process version 2012". But you can leave the existing images as they are. I would do this in general, and just update specific images - eg those which might benefit from better treatment of highlight recovery. Meanwhile, become familiar with the new adjustments by processing new images.

this will handle 2012 process? I installed that into CS5 and still received the warning I needed version 7 or let LR render ...

Over the beta ... I didn't delete it , after installing it is gone.
-
Never tried the Beta so will be installing where v3.5 is still being used............................what sort of precautions if any should I take when I decide to buy it???

Curiously, after I downloaded the new LR 4 today I checked "About Lightroom" and it said "Lightroom 4.0" and "Camera Raw 7.0."
I suspect someone jumped the gun on the labelling here.
When I checked "About Photoshop" in my CS5 it indicated that Camera Raw was still on version 6.6.
I think I'll wait for 7.0 before "editing in Photoshop."

Download the ACR 6.7 RC1 from Adobe Labs (http://labs.adobe.com/). That will process PV 2012 (but doesn't give you the UI controls). So it won't be optimal for ACR smart Objects but will render everything you set inside LR4.

Done. Thanks.
So far LR4 looks good.

So if I open as a SO in CS5 now, once CS6 is released with CR 7 will opening the smart object show the controls?

If you make a SO now with ACR 6.7 from LR4, you'll get PV 2010 in the SO. Once you get CS6 and ACR 7, reopening that SO will respect the previous settings but at that point yes, you'll be able to update the SO to 7.

+1 ::)
BTW, I still bought the digital version for two reasons:
1) I have too much of everything around in the house. Do you really need a box you'll never actually open? Go green! :D
2) Couldn't wait to test the Beta#2, ops! I meant, the final release ;)

You just download the trial to use the full version. It's only a minor annoyance having to select "trial" every time you start it up until the box arrives.

Yep, you're right. When I first visited the Adobe Lightroom product page, the trial was still referring to LRv3, that's it :)
It's fine anyway: I purchase software via download 99.5% of the times. Don't want to mess with useless boxes, nor want to trash something useless I decided to get in first place. :)

Silly, old-fashioned fogey that I am -
somehow it makes me feel better when I pay out my hard-earned cash to have something tangible in return, even if it is just a little cardboard box with a CDR in it.
