Title: Cleaning cost for a 600mm?
Post by: oceanrhythms on January 31, 2012, 08:33:15 pm
Hello,

I have my eye on a used Canon 600mm f/4 lens.  Once I purchase the lens I might send it in for cleaning.  Has anybody had their super telephoto lens cleaned?  How much did it cost you?  A friend of mine had his 70-200mm cleaned and it costed him $200 (US).  I am just wondering how much of a cost difference there will be since there is so much more glass.  The reason for the cleaning is because there appears to be a lot of dirt (not dust) on the inside elements.

Just ring Canon and ask.

A 70-200mm  might actually have more lens elements and groups  than a 600mm f/4.

I failed to mention I did call Canon and they don't give estimates with out seeing the lens first.

Have you checked out this blog: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog (http://www.lensrentals.com/blog)

These guys really know their stuff and spend lots of time cleaning and evaluating lens.  In fact, Rodger discusses the effects of dust in lenses to some startling conclusions in this article: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/08/the-apocalypse-of-lens-dust (http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/08/the-apocalypse-of-lens-dust)

I think you will find it interesting.
