Title: New Epson 7900 - where are the ICC profiles?
Post by: Foto_Geek on January 20, 2012, 04:33:24 am
I just received and assembled my new Epson 7900 today.  All went well until I tried to print my first test print.  I cannot find any of the ICC profiles for the common Epson papers.  I recall seeing the names of files flash by during the software install that looked like profiles but I do not see them installed anywhere on my Mac.  I opened the Colorsync Utility and do not see any 7900 profiles at all.  I see profiles for other printers that I have used in the past.

I tried re-installing the software from the disk that shipped with the printer but still no joy.  I checked the Epson website for 7900 profiles (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Pro/ICCProfiles/proImagingICCProfiles_StylusPro79009900.do?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&profileFor=proImagingICCProfiles_StylusPro79009900) but they only list them for less common papers.  I tried to download the latest Mac driver (ver 8.66) (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=136263&prodoid=63084607&infoType=Downloads&platform=Macintosh) for the 7900 from the Epson website several times but the .dmg will not open, it seems to be corrupt.  I thought I would try installing that in hopes that it would install ICC profiles for common Epson papers.

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a recent Mac laptop.  Any help appreciated.

I don't know exactly what you've done but perhaps try repairing your permissions in disk utility, upgrade your software and repair permissions again, reboot and see what you're able to do.

they are (most likely) hanging out in /Library/Printers/EPSON/.......

ie. for me (w/ 3800) it's......
/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles

That isn't one of the places that ColorSync Utility will look

if you're trying to do a PS softproof or 'PS manages color' then you may well need to
copy the profile(s) of interest into the ColorSync/Profiles folder so that PS can see them.
Otherwise, it's mostly about 'Printer manages color' (since the driver knows where the profiles are).

Thanks HowardM.

Yes, I see /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/ICCProfiles/Pro9900_7900.profiles !  But this file (Pro9900_7900.profiles) does not appear to be in a form that I can copy to /Library/ColorSync/Profiles, all the files there have .icc suffixes.

So one must change their workflow to fit Epson's new way of handling printer profiles?  One can no longer do soft proofs and check to see if anything is out of gamut?   One must now let the printer handle color?  I assume it gleans the type of paper you are using by what you set in the print dialog box, correct?

I rather prefer my old method.  Does anyone have 7900 profiles for common Epson media like Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper in the .icc file format that they would be willing to share?

Thanks for the help guys!

all of the Epson profiles (that live in ..../Pro38.profiles/...  (for me at least) have the .icc suffix and that's fine.  You'd just copy them over to the ColorSync location.

Foto_Geek,

You might see if this works: Hold the control key and click on the package file "Pro9900 7900.profiles" That should give you a drop down window wherein you can select "Open Package File", then double click on the "Contents" folder and then on the "Resources" folder and that should reveal the icc profiles you are looking for.

Good Luck,
Ed

Yes!  HowardM and Ed Foster, you guys are GOLDEN!  Two stars on your forehead for the day!

I was about to reply to Howard's post stating that Pro9900_7900.profiles is a file, not a folder.  But then Ed's post cleared that up for me.

I was able to show package contents and copy (not move) the individual .icc files to /Library/ColorSync/Profiles.  I am now back in business using my standard workflow!

Thanks again, I really appreciate your advice.

glad that worked out for you.

I always use the Terminal for that and to the terminal, it appears as a folder.
Just like an Application .app appears to be a monolithic entity to the Finder, it's really a folder.

Howard, you must have come from the Unix world to be using Terminal on a regular basis.  Am I right?

However, if you copy them to the colorsync folder, and you reinstall the driver, you will end up with duplicate profiles.  There is no reason to copy them, they should show up just fine in all the applications.  ColorSync can't see them, and by default you can't find them in the finder easily (as you have seen) but Photoshop and Lightroom see them just fine, as well as printing via colorsync through most other applications.

That wasn't the case for me.  I could not get Photoshop CS5 to make a good print for me no matter what I tried.  It's as if by choosing 'printer manages color' the driver was using some default ICC profile and the results were horrible.  Sure enough if I looked in ColorSync Utility -> Devices -> Printers -> EPSON Stylus Pro 7900 I could see that sRGB Profile was selected as default.  I could not figure out what to do to change this default nor could I get the printer driver to use a different profile.

So by copying the individual .icc profiles to /Library/ColorSync/Profiles I get to use 'software manages color'; thus soft proofing  and gamut warning work and I am back to my preferred workflow.

Yes there are now two copies of ICC profiles on my machine but it seems the printer driver copy is ignored if you select 'software manages color'.  I did not remove these profiles because I did not know if the driver would act up if they were missing.  I guess I could try removing them to see what happens.  I would leave the default profile at the very least.

Hello,

Did you ever find a way to get the .dmg file to install? I've been having this issue for the past week, and Epson thinks it's an OSX problem. I'm also using Snow Leopard. I spent the $50 to talk with an Apple level 2 person, we did some maintenance, but still not able to get the thing to install. ( I should mention it loaded on my newer laptop, but my desktop is what I print from.)

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

No.  I manually installed the individual .icc profile files as outlined in this thread.
