I think this section in the User Manual will answer your question:
Adding Text to Slides (http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=22%26section=8%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Aperture-UserManual-91292SLD-SW62) {EDIT: Link now correct.}
The file format of the Image's Master makes no difference to Aperture.

I do not want to export a slide show, just show it with the file name being displayed. Nothing in the manual tells you how. There must be a way to do this.....
Thanks

Hi bonnie. I'm sorry -- the link isn't correct. (Most likely I posted it incorrectly -- but Apple has recently made many changes to the User Manual which may have resulted in unexpected links.)
Try this link instead (http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=22%26section=8%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Aperture-UserManual-91292SLD-SW62).
It should take you to the sub-section in the User Manual at:
User Manual→Creating Slideshow Presentations→Modifying Settings Applied to the Entire Slideshow→Adding Text to Slides
If the link doesn't work correctly, simply navigate to that sub-section.
You can also search the User Manual for "add text to slideshow". That should bring up this page of results (http://documentation.apple.com/search/#q=add%20text%20to%20slideshow).
There are two kinds of Slideshows in Aperture: ones based on Slideshow Presets, and ones based on Slideshow Albums. You must use a Slideshow Album in order to add text to slides.
