It looks to me as if the brains they tested need to get sensors with more megapixels. The IQ is not that great, yet.  ;)

The Thought Police will be making lots of arrests.

Nope, not until Adobe comes up with a Brain Filter.

That's just because it's RAW brains. Hook it up to some plug-ins, slap it upside the head with a few curves, and voila!  ;D

It's not all over, it's just beginning. And personally, I can't wait. This will revolutionize street photography. Were he still alive, Cartier-Bresson would be first on line for the cranial implant.

Sorry to rain, but what's the point of it?

The pleasure is in the action: the chase and the capture. Remove that, and you may as well watch tv whilst eating a tube of vitamin pills. Wanking made easy, then.

Au contraire, I'd have imagined that poor old HC-B would have been the last guy to subscribe.

The point is nothing between your mind and your art. Can't beat that. And you can't beat the ability to literally photograph anything that you can see. I think instead of replacing the chase and capture this would make it 1000% more interesting and fun. I think HCB would dig the hell out of it.

But your 'art' is very much made up by the means to its existence; as much by choice of lenses and formats and techniques as is a painter's by his personal choices.

I simply don't believe anyone who tries to tell me that he has it all figured out in his head before he starts; however, if he has, then he is missing a helluva lot of the enjoyment as well as of the possibilities from the inevitable happy accident which usually makes our day. You wouldn't get happy accidents from nothing more than a thought: you need the assistance of your equipment's limitations as well as of its good qualities. In other words, the Deus ex machina in your very own machina!

Anyway, as original thinkers are even more rare than good photographers, we'd have even more shit on display than we do.

Great artists always make the best use of the best equipment. I could care less about how much shit is on display. There always has been and always will be no shortage of it. It's no reason not to embrace change. I say bring it on and let's see what today's Cartier-Bressons will do with it!

Sadly, nothing.

The outlets that made it possible for HC-B and all the rest of them have vanished, as has the innocence of the people at large, who formed the endless supply of grist to the mills.

Today, it's all in the amateur's head and he could save himself a heap of money and stress by sitting at home and reading old photobooks about the 20s, 30s, 40s and even part of the 50s. It's over, finis; the credits rolled before you came in.

So you're saying I (we?) should just chuck it all in?

Not exactly: I'm replying to Pop's hope for great things from the next generation of HC-Bs of which there won't be any.

That world depended on the left-wing publications that made - attempted to make - political capital out of stuffing deprivation down the readership's throat. That they failed abysmally is borne out by the fact that the only Communist states surviving are in the worst of all possible economic conditions that make the 'faltering' West seem idyllic.

Take away the economic (political) reasons for the existence of those papers publishing such images, and the provision of those images ceases to make sense.

Anyone with the compulsion to follow in the footsteps of HC-B et al. is doing the people equivalent of the landscape 'photo-artist's' love for existing tripod holes. No reason not to do it, but it ain't going anywhere soon.

My guess is that tv is the only photographic medium now where people wanting to be in the bloody thick of it can find emotional release.

HC-B and the likes are dead in the pond, along with the lillies.

I'm with you with respect to understanding and then studiously avoiding the existing tripod holes.  It's a real challenge to work in documentary photography while creating a uniquely identifiable style.  I'm actually about to start experimenting in video to supplement the stills for a few of my projects.

Jennifer, you'll probably do as Fred has apparently done: abandon the limitations of stiills.

You've obviously more than got the eye for a documentary mood; if you can crack the thinking about continuity then you might well  be about to embark on a better thing.

I wish you luck,

Rob C
