Can anybody tell me why the really good cinema-lenses are so expensive?
Can many of these lenses be adopted to be used on MF digital cameras?
And would hey be any better than the lenses we are using?
I have been trying to find some tests on these lenses, like a MTF, but all I can find is
nice words from the sellers ;)....
Can anyone tell me if these extremely expensive resolves better than the Hasselblad/Phase/Contax lenses?

Now, with that out of the way, one of the major reasons that pro cine lenses are so expensive is that they have extremely precise manual focus capability, without "breathing" as focus is changed and with very precise manual focusing scales. These characteristics are much less important for still photographers.
They also are usually colour matched with others in their design set.
They can't be adapted to Medium Format because all motion picture film and video formats are far smaller then even 35mm full frame, let alone MF.

Just a thought, but would't imax cover it ? As far as I know the film area is something like 70mm × 50mm or so

Hi,
I got the impression that Zeiss Compact Primes are same optical construct as normal CF lenses, so they may cover full frame. But three times the price for a third of the performance? Those lenses are not intended for photo, I don't think they have automatic aperture to begin with.

Do you mean CF lenses, as in 6x6 Hasselblad CF lenses? Full frame, as in medium format 645 full frame? I doubt it - the Hasselblad and Compact Prime lens specs have nothing in common with each other.

I think Erik is referring to the ZF lenses for the Nikon mount. BTW, these lenses can be converted so you can use them more comfortably for cinema. A company called Duclos does that. Much cheaper than buying the Zeiss cinema lenses.

Minimal or no breathing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breathing_(lens)) is no. 1 for ciné, with colour-matching less important (but still nice to have) than it used to be thanks to easier grading.

I think Erik is referring to the ZF lenses for the Nikon mount. BTW, these lenses can be converted so you can use them more comfortably for cinema. A company called Duclos does that. Much cheaper than buying the Zeiss cinema lenses.
