The campus of Bryn Mawr college has some gorgeous buildings. I was there for music, not photography, so I had only my Canon G11. Still, I really like this study of a building and its roof.

I kind of like it, too. You might also consider making a B&W version. I played with it a bit in Photoshop and I thought the image lent itself to some interesting possibilities in that direction.

Peter, I'm with Pop all the way on that. Neat shot. Give B&W a try. The color's purely incidental and probly detracts from the strong graphics. I'd give it a try here, but I'm suddenly a juror on a five day felony trial and it'll be the weekend before I can "try" anything.

I like the B&W suggestions and here is the result. I like it but am not sure I prefer it to the color version. For me, the subtle colors of the stone and slate are a large part of the image's appeal.

I don't usually post modifications to someone else's shot, but here's what I came up with. I like playing with Photoshop's B&W conversion filters to bring out textures and contrasts. I also did some minor cropping (gasp!), which probably wasn't necessary but what the heck.

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that your image, interesting as it may be, does not look like the actual scene. Of course only I saw that scene, so everyone else does not have that "reality" to judge against.

It all depends on what you're after. Interpretation is inherent in the act of photographing something, and B&W itself is an abstraction of reality.

Since I haven't seen the original scene, I must say I really like Popn's version. I also like the original "pastel" version.

I also like the original color best. For me it's the appeal of the subtle colour contrast between the colder blue slate and the warmer tan stone.
What bothers me in the composition is the slight slant of the roof line you see near the top half left edge. It detracts from the for the rest very nicely build up of lines. Don't know what you could have done differently, but just wanted to mention it. Overall I still think it's a nice picture.

Yes, that slanted roof element does stand out. But, it's unavoidable because it is part of the roof, which is slanting away from the camera.

The color version is good, but I think Pop's B&W conversion is even better. The subtle colors are nice but the geometry and the textural contrasts are what make the shot. Pop's B&W emphasizes both.

Sorry Eric, got there first - I did the quick re-edit at work using the rather good and totally FREE www.pixlr.com website, if I'd had more time or access to PS, I would have also straightened out the tiles along the top a bit.
So a great shot Peter and obviously we all think with lots of potential.
