I note today (Sky News) that copying of CDs and DVDs is now becoming legal in the UK. Wedges and thin ends; maybe time to close down our websites and consign the whole image business to the dogs?

It's not what you think, it's part of fair use:
At the moment it is technically illegal to transfer content from CDs and DVDs onto a different format such as a computer or MP3 player.
Today the Government is putting the wheels in motion to change this, allowing people to transfer content and make copies for their own and immediate family's personal use.

In other words, it should be my legal right to watch any of my Blurays and DVDs I've bought on my PS3, PC, HTC Legend, PSP, or turn it into a flipbook for personal use. This is part of fair use in many countries, and I'm glad at least one new country is recognizing this right. It also legalizes turning your CD collection to MP3s, which is currently illegal in the UK AFAICT.

Handier yet, being of the old school, would be to know how I can translate my cassettes into those tiny sticks that you can plug into the car and play on the new sound systems... the cassette player on the old Escort keeps breaking down and chews them; the new Fiesta takes CDs and those little things I just mentioned, but not tapes.
Any ideas how to do the transfer from cassette to stick?

Probably Memory Stick if it's a Sony player. But see, converting your cassettes to those sticks is exactly what is illegal right now in the UK, so I won't answer your question. Google shows several solutions to convert cassettes to MP3s, or to convert cassettes to audio CDs. Note that the sound quality will be atrocious, and the conversion is a pretty big PITA.
The law is probably not enforced at all, but that's another story.

Aren't those cassettes themselves already illegal, i.e., already a second-generation copy from something else (radio, LP or CD)? ;)
