Title: George Barr on Why Photographs Work
Post by: Mark D Segal on May 30, 2011, 09:04:27 pm
Michael beat me to it: I was intending to write a review of this book, but I was waiting to set aside enough time to do it justice. Michael has done it justice. This is indeed an EXCELLENT book in every respect, and Michael's review is spot-on. The selection of photographs is diverse enough to provide a wide canvas for exploring what makes photographs work. George's analyses of these photos is art appreciation at its best, and the accompanying remarks by the photographers about their photographs nicely complements George's essays. The reproduction of the images is to a high standard. I was also struck by the technical variety displayed in this collection. It confirms yet again that the art isn't about whether you shoot digital or film (both are well-represented here), but whether you understand what makes photographs work. If you think you may need to spruce-up that understanding, this is the book to buy. Now one of the most treasured in my collection.

Echo that, mostly. It is a very enjoyable read. I found myself "reading" a few photographs at a time to allow time for them to settle in. It is a book I will pick up from time to time and explore at random, a few at a time. My only nit is that a heavier paper be used as in some cases there is show through the print, "Code" for example with much blank, and lovely, space. That said I highly recommend it also.

I also enjoyed The Contact sheet amzn.to/ifajSQ (http://amzn.to/ifajSQ) . It details the selection process behind iconic photographs

Does LL have an affiliate link to Amazon that I could use? Been looking for good new books on art of photography and this seems to fit the bill.

A most excellent book, a welcome addition to my photography library.  After reading it through for the first time, I bought two more copies for photographer friends.

I was expecting "classic" works, historical examples.  Instead, most of the work is recent - most welcome discovery.  A truly inspiring group of photographs, complete with notes by the author and the photographers.

Highest possible recommendation.
