Following up on a picture (http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/20/is-this-samsungs-first-medium-format-digital-camera/) from a week ago, Mirrorless Rumors reports (http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/exclusive-samsung-goes-medium-format-canon-and-nikon-should-be-worried/) that Samsung is developing a "medium format" mirrorless camera with a square sensor costing less than 645D:
1) The camera uses a 36mm x 36mm square sensor!
2) Samsung developed three different sensors. One 18 Megapixel sensor and two different 34 Megapixel sensors.
3) The lens you can see on the picture is a manual focusing 24mm lens.
4) It has a shorter lens-sensor distance than other medium format cameras (Editor’s note: Probably because it’s mirrorless)
5) On the road… AF lenses, EVF and optional accessories like grip, flash and screen.
6) The development is under phase two (That means Protocol, Viability and Marketing). Phase three is when the final decision will be taken.
It's a rumor, but the site has a pretty good track record.
Square is my favorite film/sensor aspect ratio, but I'm in a small minority with that. But a 36x36mm square sensor doesn't really make sense to me: it equals full frame when cropped to the same aspect ratio along with an MP drop, and probably requires new lenses.
Not sure who's calling it MF, perhaps the same marketing people who came up with the world's first full frame camera...

Should we consider a site who calls a 36x36mm sensor medium format, and who says that this new product could affect thea lleged two big ones who are claimed to have the pro market???
Sorry... ;)

I think this was a photo of a bunch of prototypes and mock ups, but however the rumor was debunked elsewhere.

Hey, digital medium format starts at 25X37mm. Just look at Pentax and Leica! ???

people call the phase p20 medium format, so why not?
one wonders if this were true...if it would be CMOS and shoot video.
sorta-medium format camera with iso 12800 and 1080p (or maybe they'd get ballsy and go 4k).
could be fun.

I think you've hit on the right name for these: "sorta-medium format," or SMF for short.

36x36mm is a FF square 35 mm , good idea though

dont worry about debating on whether or not its medium format at all (I too, have a difficult time accepting the Leica is MF)
its just not gonna hot the production line
