Title: One more Q for printing on wood veneer
Post by: hud on May 10, 2011, 01:31:39 pm
For anyone who has printed on wood veneer via a 3880 inkjet, how are you dealing with whites?  Any advise would be helpful.

thanks, jack

I have a set of the Faber-Castell color pencils. Take the white one and trace it onto the clouds or whatever is white. Take your finger and lightly dab the penciled area to blend it in.
You can also try a white water color pencil.
You could select an image with minimal whites. Not sure about the 3880 but it probably stops laying down the light greys (LLK) somewhere around 250-252 not sure. The white pencil then works pretty good for bringing out the whites like a lightning bolt or white cloud.
Its not white ink but on wood it does the job.

Get your whites below 250 and you will at least have ink but not white. The white pencil then works pretty good for bringing out the whites like a lightning bolt or white cloud.

Wow, great advise Dan!!!  Much appreciated!!

Since your printing on wood and it needs a receptor precoat before printing you could use the Inkaid white matte precoat.
2 or 3 coats will not completely cover the grain but your wood will have a white washed finish. At least you have a little more of a white base to print on rather then the natural wood color.
When I sold my cabinetry business I kept my 3 large veneer sample books. Approximately 125 veneer samples from around the world.
So lots of really neat grain patterns to play with. They are raw veneer with no backers and measure at around .020, Perfect for my 3800.
