Title: Looking for an old article on Kodak here on LL.
Post by: Tim Gray on May 01, 2011, 08:06:42 am
The article was about the history of their trials and tribulations as they tried to mount an competitive offering for the (then) emerging digital market.

Spent 5 minutes with various search parameters to no avail.

Thanks.

Perhaps one of these: An Open Letter To Kodak's Management (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/kodak-ol.shtml) or Kodak DCS 760m (monochrome) (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/kodak-760m.shtml).

Thanks, but neither.  Maybe just a seniors moment - but my recollection is that the article was written by someone with experience working for Kodak (I think) and it traced their internal development efforts and gave some insight why there were never able to hit the market with any impact after the initial DSC's.

Here's another one, albeit not specifically about Kodak: The Rise of Digital imaging and the Fall of the Old Camera industry (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/rise-fall.shtml)

Hi Tim!

Well i personally have no knowledge about Kodak. To be frank i just know that it is a camera maker or camera accessories maker. please correct me if i am wrong!

So what did you find about the shortcomings on the part of Kodak that led it to failure to capture digital market? let me know! :P

Thanks

Max

My recollection of the article was that Kodak's problem was probably more about having trouble executing than having the wrong strategy.  They had the first "professional" digital cameras and good sensor technology.  They tried to bring subsequent down-market cameras to production but were always either too late or uncompetitive performance-wise.  I'm doing a presentation on disruptive innovation (as defined by Clayton Christensen) and I was planning to use them as an example of a company valiantly trying to overcome the "Innovator's Dilemma".

but I may be mis-remembering the article so wanted to have another look before I make any kind of reference.
