Title: Focus Trap??? Which cameras can I use focus trap with?
Post by: haring on April 13, 2011, 08:17:22 am
- Is focus trap a feature of the lens or the camera? I am sorry if the question is too basic.-
- Is there a list of DSLRs I can use "focus trap" with? Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica, Mamiya, Hasselblad, etc...?
- Can I use with any lens on cameras which capable of the focus trap feature?

I have a few old manual lenses and it would be great to focus on moving subjects...

Thanks a lot!

I believe focus trap can be added to almost any camera--some use ultrasound and some use light (more expensive).

If you're asking for a camera with this built in, the only one I am aware of is the Rollei Hy6 (aka AFi).

The focus trap technique is when you set your af camera to autofocus with a manual lens attached and hold down the shutter. You then focus manually and when the camera sees something in focus it will take a shot. As far as I know this works with almost any camera with auto focus by setting it to autofocus so that it will take a shot when the image comes into focus (but not before). This is a property of the camera, I would hazard a guess that anything that can take a modern lens can do this. I wouldn't try it on an old n8008s from the 90's.
I don't think there is a list of cameras this works on, but I think if one of your lenses works on a certain camera then they all should.
Keep in mind that as soon as the camera sees something focus it will fire, that could be a bird or a cloud or a tree or the window pane in front of you, it will take some getting used to.
