Title: Printing from LR3: page margin settings get ignored
Post by: CASpyr on March 29, 2011, 08:04:38 am
I'm trying to print from LR3.3 on 10x15 cm paper with 0.5 cm of margin on all sides. It is no problem to set this up in the print module, everything looks as intended on screen. However, the margin settings are ignored and I get a borderless print.

My system:
Win7 64-bit, LR 3.3 64-bit, HP B9180 printer (connected by USB cable)

Things I tried:
- changed the settings for the paper from 'borderless 10x15cm' to '10x15cm'. Result: the image is printed flush with the left paper edge, with uneven margins on top, right and bottom. None of the margins is 0.5 cm.
- print to file: works fine, margins exactly as specified!
- print from Photoshop CS5 (to check functionality of the printer driver): resized the image to 9x14 cm, printed from PS CS5 using the borderless paper setting: exactly as intended, the image is centered and has the correct margins all around.

Any ideas why I fail to print what I see on screen in LR? Are LR and the printer driver not talking correctly to each other?

Thanks for any input!

Christian

I have had the same problem. It is the Windows7 driver of HP. You have to change in one of the printer dialog panels the print processor to the one with its name ending with w7. Then printing is back to normal, be it that borderless printing is no longer possible. There is always a minimum border. The plus side is that the dimensions of a print cell is quite accurately respected, at least the width, sometimes the length is a mm or less off.

Thank you for responding, JRSmit! I suspected it is something deep inside the system.
I checked according to your instructions: right click on the printer in the control panel > printer properties > advanced, which is where I find at the bottom the button labelled 'print processor...'. Clicking it shows a list of print processors with three entries: hpzpplhn (seems to have been installed with my HP All-in-one, is not selected), hpzpp4v2 (which is selected), and winprint. I don't see anything ending in w7.

I tried however with the winprint processor, which worked when selecting the 'non-borderless' format in the printer driver (doesn't work with 'borderless 10x15').

Thanks a lot for helping me solve the problem!

Strange, HPZPPWN7 is not on my list. As winprint seems to be doing what you describe for HPZPPWN7, I'll not try to hunt down the latter and be content to have printing form LR (almost) back to normal.

Thanks again for your input!

Did you check the HP website to see if there is a new driver for your printer?

Yes I have. It's always the first thing I do when running into trouble with computer hardware...
The difficulty is that this printer (Photosmart B9180) has been discontinued by HP, which shows in their level of support (the driver dates back to 2009...)
