Title: Bridge/ACR/PSCS4 stability
Post by: Brian Silcox on March 19, 2011, 06:02:25 am
Hi

New here, been running CS4 on Snow Leopard for a bit over a year.  So far wasted many hours with Adobe on the phone.  Bridge and PS locks up or quits ("adobe bridge has quit unexpectedly..."   "Photoshop CS4 has quit unexpectedly,")  I have never been able to resolve this issue.  Mac Pro desktop with 8GB ram.  Is it possible that I have only set up preferecnces poorly?  I have read many forums related to this when Snow Leopard first debuted, not so much more recently... and I am presently quite surprised when I see the combination described as " stable."

Any help here greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, CS4 is not fully "Cocoa" so it tends to be unstable on 10.6.
One of it's major sensitivities are fonts.
Try to remove any fonts that weren't installed by the system. It should work better.

Thank you for your response.  Can anyone else confirm this "known" incompatibility?  I woud readily upgrade to CS5 or later if I thought it would solve the issue.

I wouldn't say that not being Cocoa leads to more instability on Snow Leopard, but certainly CS5 which is Cocoa performs better than CS4. If CS4 is not stable (meaning crashing a lot) I suspect other things are at the root. Disabling Open GL in Photoshop CS4 can help. Also be sure that all the CS4 components are the most updated.

The most common problems that cause crashes are really due to either bad hardware or faulty OS and application installs. While it's painful and time consuming to do, I would suggest considering a complete backup, wiping the drive and doing fresh installs of the OS and CS4. I suggest that really as a last resort and not something to be done lightly, but if your system and applications are having problems, it's the best way to get to an known optimal state.

Thanks Jeff,

I have re installed CS 4 several times, but I am ready try the os re-install as well as CS4 at this point.  I understand that by upgrading to CS5, I lose the 4GB ram limit in PS?  This would make the upgrade worth the move. (to me)

I have 4 drives in the MAC and have the OS and the Adobe apps on the same drive.  Would it be better to separate these?

Upgrading to CS5 will offer 64-bit support and thus access to more ram, yes...

No reason to seperate the OS and the applications (lot of good reasons not to) but it is useful to have Photoshop's scratch disk set to a different physical drive than the OS is on.

I have installed CS5, and have benefitted in normal stability in Photoshop and Camera Raw under OS 10.6.  After three intensive days of work, neither program locked up or shutdown, and I am seeing considerable faster performance in the 64 bit capability.

Thanks to all,
