Title: Portrait Crop from Landscape

i thought there was a way to apply a custom aspect portrait crop to a landscaped image but can't seem to find it

Under the crop dialogue choose "custom" for the Aspect and click on the little lock to unlock the constraint.

If you leave the little icon locked, grab one of the corner handles (say the top right for example), and instead of dragging left and down you drag left and up, it will switch orientation but retain the same proportions.  The 'X' key does the same thing, as John already mentioned.
