I was out that way last Fall around the dates you propose. We were based in Ouray.
We were up on Owl Creek Pass Road, in the Uncompahgre National Forest, at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mt. Sneffels along the Dallas Creek drainage/Miller Mesa, and up on the Last Dollar Road on the way into Telluride.
Here's my gallery from that trip:

Peak fall color is hard to predict and the exact dates will depend greatly on local conditions. We hit it a little late but the compensating factor was snowfall earlier in the week which gave us some great contrasts between the snow and aspen color.
The Forest Service has a fall color website (this is last season's, hasn't started for this year yet):

Do you happen to recall what the night time temperature lows were... I plan on camping out in the region you describe in early October.
Ken,
Pre-dawn temps were down in the low 30's (F) in the Ouray area. Â YMMV, though.
Here's a handy-dandy weather guide with monthly averages:

I am planning a trip to Telluride and Boulder Utah for Fall Colour - Aspens. Any advice on locations and timing. I have plans to be in these areas for the last week of September and the First week of October.
Thanks Steven

Last year in August I was west of Capitol Reef on a high ridge. Aspens were starting to turn then. A real treat since I didn't expect any real color that time of year.
