Title: FOBA MINI SUPERBALL PLUS (BALMU) - Anyone Using This (used this)?
Post by: brandtb on January 27, 2011, 08:29:38 am
I would like to know if any readers are using this Foba unit (or similar), or has used it, and would comment on its field performance.  Secondary comments on Foba in general, and reliability of products, support etc..

Even though called mini, it is large!  You don't indicate what gear type you intend to use with it.
I have one.  I like it OK for indoor work, but too large & subject to dirt gumming up the works in the field. (FF DSLR)  After buying Acratech head the Foba gets little use as the Acratech is easily it's equal for most studio situations & and vastly superior in the field.

Unless mounted on a substantial tripod, the Foba makes the tripod almost "top-heavy" feeling.  On my Gitzo 3 section CF pod it always felt that way.  Add the camera & slightly uneven terrain & it made me nervous - though I never really had a problem.

Quality is good, though no match for the Acratech. You'll either love or hate the main large lever. I was constantly having to reposition it so as to not impede camera position.
