Title: Alternative to Miracle Muck
Post by: Ian99 on January 18, 2011, 09:31:43 am
For laminating canvas to Gatorboard, everyone seems to recommend Rapahael’s Miracle Muck. However this is not shipped to Canada.
Does anybody know of a good alternative available in Canada– presumably pH neutral PVA?

You can also use Breathing Color's Glamour II.  More Expensive than Muck but will work fine.

Note, don't try Timeless as it's too thin.

Paul, thanks for the response. After all this time I had just about given up!

You are correct, Glamour II is a LOT more expensive than Miracle Muck, especially here in the frozen North, but it does work. I have some left over since I switched to Timeless, so I will use the old Glamour II until it runs out.

Actually, I have used Timeless for laminating – it works OK but the bond can be broken and the canvas stripped off fairly easily. Therefore I can claim this process to be archival!!

Long term though I need something cheaper.

This probably isn't the right answer, but is a pressure sensitive roll adhesive an option? I use GBC Arctic DuraMount. I see that by the bucket the miracle muck is cheap, but I don't know how far it goes, so I really have no basis for economic comparison. The math would be fairly simple if I knew how many sq" in the Muck covered.

There is a product made by D&K Group, Inc. called Superstick Heat Assist Giclee Mounting Adhesive, which is designed for mounting canvas giclees to non porous boards.

I've ordered a sample, but haven't used it. I'd love to hear from anyone who has any experience with it. Here's a link:

It's cheaper, ph neutral and I like the name better. Plus it's made by Drytac not some half assed Raphael's

Are you getting special pricing on Lamin-All?  The site you listed has Lamin-All for about $50 a gallon.  Raphael's (despite the funny name ;D) is about $25 a gallon--even with shipping, Miracle Muck is less than the United Mfrs list price for Lamin-All.

Yeah, I like the name better too.  :)

Ken,

You are right about the price.  Guess I was thinking about something else. But I like that you can buy quarts, I think the stuff will store longer in smaller bottles.  Drytac told me the shelf life was officially one year but they have had clients who say it will last several years.

Maybe Raphael's is repackaging Elmer's glue. Just a thought I've no proof

Funny, Raphael's is local to me but won't sell to me because I don't have a business license. You would think they were selling uranium.
