I bought the Nikon 8800, principally for the VR capability. Works like a champ, lens is good. They all use the same chip so they are similar in most other ways. I usually recommend the Olympus P&S line, but they don't offer VR yet.

need advice here!
in the nice position of choosing a new camera, and am stuck between nikon8800, sony f828, or olympus 8080. need a portable camera for hauling round the world doing travel / artichecture/ natural history shots. like the nikon but am wondering about the cf write speed issue. like the olympus ++++ but need more reasch than 200mm (with tele lens ).

I wouldn't bother with any of them. Get a 350D, ideally with the 17-85IS, but if you cannot stretch to this stick to the 18-55 in the kit. You will get much better results. I know that this will limit you on the tele end, but I do not think a digicam would be a good choice for natural history anyway.

I second Drew's recommendation. The smaller DSLRs rival the P&S cameras regarding size, weight, and cost, but deliver much better results in a much wider variety of circumstances.
