You might want to see if there's any error/warning message in the Console. Does this happen if you boot in safe mode?

Check the energy settings system preference too.

Does it actually power itself OFF, so the little blue light over the power button on the box is not lit? Or does it just go into deep sleep? If the former, that's definitely weird. IF the former, that's definitely weird. IF the latter, don't sleep the drives.

Ok, The system shuts itself down completely. No light on the box or displays (you know the lower righthand corner on the frame of the cinema display) Energy saver is set to 15 minutes for both displays and hard drive. This is what console says...
11/4/10 10:38:14 AM configd[15] Sleep: Platform Failure - AC
com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.powermanagement.sleep
com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
com.apple.message.result: Failure
com.apple.message.uuid: 71592210-79A4-42C0-89A9-8559BDAAC516
Looks to be a sleep related issue (I know that I have one, don't get enough of it)
attempting to re create the problem in safe start up mode
thanks for your input...

Any peripherals connected to your Mac other than the Apple mouse & keyboard?

Great, problem does not occur in safe mode. I have a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet, epson 9880 printer and two other world computing voyager bare drive docks connected. All drivers are up to date and the devices were playing nice with the Mac until yesterday. I will unplug everything and restart....

The trick now will be to remove a device one at a time until this issue stops. It could be an issue with a USB, FireWire or similar device.
You don’t have any cables hooked up going nowhere do you? That is, a FireWire cable inserted with no device on the other end (awaiting a device)? Not a good idea.

Unplugged everything, cables to nowhere are unplugged, ethernet unplugged, everything unplugged. Restarted in regular (not safe mode) and the problem persists. Which is that she shuts herself down after about 5 minutes asleep (hard drive and monitor). Weird. So to recap, she works fine in safe mode with everything plugged in, but has this "issue" when she is started in regular mode with or without everything plugged in. Need to do some research and find out what exactly "Safe Mode" is...

Safe Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Edit: one thing that you can do is to install a fresh Mac OS X system on an external HD and boot on it.

Plug everything back in. Now make a new account and log in. Does it shut down? If not, it seems to be something in the User System that you’ll have to track down.

internal power supply......

That's at least an easy one -- congrats!

Thanks everyone for the advice, system still likes to shut it's self down after it goes to sleep for about five minutes. My solution? never let the hard drive sleep. I am too busy at the moment for a clean install...
