Title: Extreme magenta cast calibrating with Spectravieiw, i1 Display2, 10.6.4
Post by: hoffsta on November 02, 2010, 04:33:43 am
Hey there everyone, I'm a new user, long time lurker. I recently acquired a NEC LCD2690WUQi2 to go with my Mac Pro running 10.6.4. Whenever I run Spectraview II I end up with an EXTREME magenta cast. During the beginning stages of the calibration, while "measuring primaries", the screen looks fine but once the software starts "Adjusting White Point" it all suddenly shifts magenta in a big big way. BTW the white point is (0.312,0.330) according to Spectraview. When rebooting the monitor the NEC startup screen is perfectly neutral but once the profile loads color is way off.

Another piece of the story is that the same thing was happening on my old Laptop with EyeOne Match. The only way I could get a non-magenta profile was by selecting "Native White Point". The fact that EyeOne Match can create a good profile with "Native White Point" suggests that the hardware is not damaged but that software is causing the problem.

What could be causing this effect? I'm starting to suspect the i1 Display2 may be faulty. Or, some older version of EyeOne Match might be interfering somehow. Any clues.

Attached is a look at the 2690 on the left and a neutral monitor on the right.

Thanks,
Sean

UPDATE: If I select Native White Point (instead of D65) in Spectraview, I get a nice neutral calibration. The only problem is that I can't reduce the intensity (264.3 cd/m2) and the white point is 7196 K (0.266, 0.479). What to do?

Did you connect the USB cable to the monitor?

Sounds to me like the custom wide-gamut calibration in the sensor has a problem (hence why you only see the problem with SpectraView - because only that software uses the custom calibration settings in the sensor). Please contact NEC support and they will supply you with a new sensor.

I don't think this display has a usb port? Am I missing it? I just plugged the sensor directly into the computer.

Also to clarify: My puck is not the NEC but the standard Gretag i1 Display 2. The phenomenon is happening in Spectraview, EyeOne Match, and ColorEyes Display when any white point other than "native" is selected. This is leading me to believe it may be an Apple issue.

I found the following threads that indicate there may be issues with the Driver and Snow Leopard but I haven't found any solutions:

Sean, I had this exact same problem ( http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=44764.0 ).

It was not confined to the NEC monitor either. The problem exists when I try to set a non-native white point on my apple monitor (using i1 match) as well. I never resolved it. When looking around the web I found a few others who described a similar problem which made me suspect that it was a software issue. On the other hand, the problem exists both when using I1 as well as sprectraview which sounds like a hardware issues. Either way I never fixed it and just use the eye-one pro, which works but it's an expensive option.

Nope... you're not missing it... I'm posting without enough sleep again! I should know, I actually own a 2690. D'OH. Mixing it up with something else that uses USB to communicate with the monitor instead of DDC.

Cheers, Joe

Or the EyeOne has gone south.

Thanks for the insights. I think I'm going to ask around to see if I can find another puck amongst my local friends to try to rule out the hardware. I'm also going to try this process with a freshly installed Snow Leopard system to eliminate the chance of software cruft causing it. I'll add an update as I learn more.

UPDATE: I tried the i1D2 on a clean install of Snow Leopard: still not working with Spectraview II or Eye-One Match 3.6.3. I know this puck worked great on my Leopard install. I may have to set up a new Leopard OS to rule out hardware failure and I bet money it will. More to come...
