Title: New forum software guru needed
Post by: fredjeang on September 26, 2010, 01:07:06 pm
Yes I'm tech useless, I know, but at least I could upload an attachment into the post. Now I can't.

I've been away this summer and lost the changes.

Something weired is happening: simply can't insert an attachment into the post, and I've been trying in 2 different independant units with different OS and with absolutly all the possible browsers. Nada! Rien de rien! no submit button.

I checked the forum in search of any solution and nothing. Just Mark pointed a "possible cache issue". Got rid of the cache, nothing.

How do you guys are uploading pictures in your posts? it seems that I'm the only one who can not do that.

(the first pic I will upload with the new software will be a bomb!)

Thanks.

Have you tried to attach a file in Additional Options?

Have you tried to attach a file in Additional Options?
That's the only method I've found that works. One small annoyance is that if you preview your post, the preview doesn't show the attached image!
And if you want to attach more than one, you must click where it says "(more attachments)," which doesn't look at all like a clickable button.

There is also a button at the left, just above the row of smileys, that says "Insert image" if you hover the mouse over it. But if you click it, it inserts a pair of html tags, (open square bracket)img(close square bracket) followed by (open square bracket)/img(close square bracket) with the cursor in between them, but with no information about how or where you are to get an image into it. Unless you are a coder, this is meaningless.

Yes Slobodan, and I can attach 4 files there but then there is no submit button or something to actually put those into the post.
That does not make sense because it happens the same in 2 different computers with 2 different OS.

Hi Eric,
Do you mean that when you attach one file, although you can't see the image in the preview it would show-up in the post once posted?
If so, problem solve then.

Fred,

See my post just above yours. If you attach up to four images, they will appear in your post even without a "submit" button. But you won't see them when you "preview." But they will be there when you post.

Not a very intuitive system. I sure hope the great improvements this new software makes in the main LuLa website will be worth the agony.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean! And it took a lot of wild experimentation and pulling my hair out to discover that.

That's an excellent photo, Fred. But you should have asked Chris to get his leg out of the way while you photographed. ;D

I tried, but he was too absorbed by the view and did not take care of me ;D

Curiouser and curiouser...

I thought I'd added a post to this thread yesterday, perhaps I got as far as Preview and then lost the plot again. Happens, sometimes.

Anyway, Fred, I had asked this: the leg is beautiful, but is it Spanish or even Scottish? Whatever it is, there is huge sensuality in those stretched muscles and taut instep. Put me in a right sweat, so it did. I had not know that I was secretly a leg man; funny what you discover on the Internet.

Perhaps that's why I didn't (?) post the original reply that I'd written: overwhelmed by a pierna.

I can not see the image unless logged in. Is this by design? Did I (likely) miss the memo?

I spend so little time now on the forums since this layout change. I find them  so cold and uninviting now,  that I have no desire to linger. A real shame.

I'm not Robin Wood, but I will defend this website for several reasons.

I find ultimately that Lu-La has been publicly attacked a lot, in the skin (the new website design) or in the contents (articles, advertisings...).
I think this is unfair to be honest.

We are all here because it is the place to be on the internet, or in the top 5 photographic websites and forums and for most the number one. We can't expect everything to please us. It is exactly like in the critic section, you will never be in the situation to be pleased by all the pics involved.

If an article does not please one, just ignore it, that is what I do. It does not mean that this website is sinking or any apocalyptic comments that I read here since back from "hollidays".
Jugdments are always difficult, we all have our parameters. Sometimes you'll find content that will not resonate with us, then the next week we'll find a very good article etc...

About the new design, they took a gamble, and it was very difficult because we were so used to the old design and at first we are looking for our familiar furnitures.
Personally, I got used to it now and don't see any difference between before.
This design to me is more elegant without reinventing the wheel.

I'm sorry Fred, but I have to disagree with you.

Look at the mess it has become when I try to upload an image. I am looking at the tools right now: there is a paragraph called Additional Options. Below that, three choices/boxes to tick, which have nothing to do with uploading pictures.

Then, we come to the line that says Attach: a long box, then Examinar (in Spain, at least). You click on Examinar and then up comes your source of image - whatever it be, in my case an external hard-drive. I click on Equipo, Iomega and then choose the image. Lastly, I click Post and that's it.

And what do I get when I look at the posted post? The written message plus a symbol that I then have to click, which brings up another interface and then another, until, finally, up comes the picture within a horrid little framework...

So really, for me, the old way of posting was far superior, as was the experience for anyone wanting to see the images.

I don't think it is a problem at this end, because I see my awkward system repeated by other people here as well, and also as straightforward images that need no further clicking. No advance that I can see! If neither LuLa nor Rob C are to blame, then it must be that something else is at work here that's out of control.

Rob C

EDIT: haefnerphoto seems to share exactly the same sequence as I for his shots to be seen; those of tokengirl, for example and in contrast, come up as straight pictures, visible right away without further clicks. Why?

Hi Rob ... this is not normal behaviour for how it's supposed to work.  The way it should be working for you when you view a post that has an image attachment is that at the bottom of the text of the post you should see a thumbnail of the image (or multiple thumbnails if there's more than one image).  When you click on the thumbnail it should do one of two things (depending on the size of the image):

1.  The thumbnail expands to the full sized image and shows in place (if the image is small enough to fit into the layout width)
or
2.  The image shows in a pop-up window

This is pretty much exactly how the previous forum software worked as well as far as viewing attached images.  There should be no additional clicking, frameworks, or anything of that nature needed.  Is it possible that you're web browser is causing the extra steps in between -- like blocking or requiring confirmation from you to load the full sized image or the popoup window?  Is it possible that you've got addons installed in your web browser that are causing the extra steps?

Again please let me know what browser and OS versions you are using and I will try and replicate this issue to see what all of these additional steps you're complaining about are ... on all of the browsers I've tested it works as I stated above.

Hi Mark,

I rarely see (IE 8.0, both 32 and 64bit versions, Win7 64-bit) a thumbnail of attached images these days.
Here is an example of what I see (screen print crop attached using the browse button under Additional Options):
X   here is where I'd want to insert the image, just like when I'm explaining something that needs to be immediately illustrated to keep the flow of reading in the correct sequence going.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Bart

Hi Bart

Ok that is very helpful.  Now I know what the issue is -- and it will only affect IE users (the img has been set by the forum software with empty width and height tags).  I will investigate getting this sorted out asap.

Ok I think this one is resolved.  IE users please let me know, it's working ok in my test environments in IE now ...

This was a very strange one indeed.  It only affected some images, and I'm still not able to figure out why certain images were affected and others weren't. *scratches head* -- it's an SMF bug or sure though.  My "fix" isn't the proper fix, but it will due until I can work out the real problem (or the SMF devs work out the real problem).

Mark,
Rob is right, there is an issue.
For what I've been looking, it is not I.E but windows. If you watch the site in the I.E Mac version it will work, but with the latest on windows there is this problem Rob is talking about.
Actually, I.E 8 has issue, then the 9 beta solve in part the thing. Moz in windows has issues that does not have the Mac...
I know, your job is hell because of the chaos in the standards.

Edit: I don't know if you where working on it while I was posting this, but it seems to work properly now. Rob, do you confirm or still have issues? Could it be a cache problem?

Hi Mark,

FYI I'm getting a (pre)view (seems to be fixed at 800 pixels maximum dimension for larger images in other posts) at the bottom of the same post now in IE, not really a thumbnail. Clicking the hotlink below it, not the image itself, will allow to view full (uploaded) size. It would also be most useful if one had the (optional) opportunity to place the image anywhere, not just at the bottom of the post. Just asking ...

Thanks,
Bart

To place an image within the post body you have to use inline images, attachments won't work for that.  As for the smaller images and then downloading the full sized one you are right.  I will look at the settings later this evening and see if this is the root of the problems.  I suspect that the max image width has somehow been set smaller than the thumbnail width and it's massively confusing SMF.
Title: Re: New forum software guru needed

There was a PHP module missing which was the root of the problems.  The images now behave as they were intended to, the way I described them in a previous post.  You get a thumbnail and then when you click it either shows inline if it fits within the layout size or in a popup window if it's larger.

Thanks for your inputs, guys, and as this is 'first thing in the morning after sweeping the terrace' time, I shall try again to see how it works, though I do note that my last uploaded image on Tokengirl's thread about boats and pooches has now changed to the intended style!

Let's go!

As an aside: twenty-nine years ago that side of the road where Rusty is parked was a mud pavement; you could pick almost any spot on the roadside and find a max. of about three sets of wheels. Now, you have to utter a prayer before you leave home that there will be a slot! We seem to be much better off but hardly as happy. I know many old locals who mourn the old days of discipline, when you could leave the doors unlocked when you went out; today's young people think that is myth. Read the papers and you also get a totally one-sided take on the F days. Vilification comes so easily. I really wonder how much has been gained and at what price.

Eric, now that's perceptive! I think we probably share more common ground than you were aware of our sharing; be careful - the road gets bumpy if you start down that direction!
