Hey Everyone,
I'm looking to get into doing some product photography. I currently have an H1 with a p30+ back. I use either a 120 macro or a 50-110. I'm looking for a sturdy tripod/ ballhead that will hold this. I want to do product photography with combining pictures with lighting taken at different angles etc. So I need it to not move AT ALL. If you guys have anything you recommend, or even better, one for sale, please let me know.

I use a Cambo UST. I would recommend this one or one like it, eg. the Foba for this. These things are so lovely and easy in use. They are big, heavy and cumbersome until you start using them. A true joy compared to the clumsy things like tripods.

There's no such thing as a column stand. I'm a FOBA user.
Also a 058B (from manfrotto/bogen) owner. It's ok for location work, it is, indeed, very stable, but "i have no love for them".

The Manfrotto 058 is a great tripod for the money, very stiff, but nothing like a decent column stand.
I have a Sinar on the Cambo, so no need for a head.

Make sure you never try to take a picture where you have not got a solid concrete floor...
I am thinking of using hand-held remote flash, and electronic shutters, so my weight would not always be in the same place.

If it was me, I wouldn't use a ballhead for this. The Manfrotto 410 or 405 geared heads or the new Arca d4 when it is available.
If you can afford or find a used Foba Asaba, that would probably be the best option.

The Triaut (058) is great but I prefer the Triman (028): http://www.manfrotto.com/product/028B
Its shape is better at resisting torque, and it is rated for the same load (12kg) while being 30% lighter (4.15kg vs. 6.15kg) so it's a joy to take out in the field...although "lighter" may not be the attribute you are looking for with your studio application.

I agree with the others, I wouldn't use a ballhead.
I use the big bogen 3051 (manfrotto 058) with a heavy duty 3 lever 3D head, on a locking dolly. That works up through my heaviest medium and large format rigs (20lbs)
If I had a more permanent shooting space, I'd get a Foba or Cambo UST stand with a big geared head for your stated use.

We too use a column stand in studio, if you don´t want to use one of those or for location work take a look at this one:

It is not the one you will like to carry around but it is very strong. I recommend the use of a very good head as this can become your weakest point very easy.

The 058 is my fav. set of legs. So easy to adjust with the release levers, very sturdy. I've had or have several Gitzo and Manfrotto leg sets and nothing beats the 058 for ease of use. I use it with a Sinar P and RZ systems.
A good head is essential. For anything precise a geared head will make your life easier. The 3d pan heads I've had move a little when tightened up. This is also why I hate my my Sinar, the standards move a little when you tighten them to the rail, which can result in being off axis by a degress or so. So I'd get a geared head. The Manfrotto 410 should be fine for a H series.

Have you thought about a geared head instead? I use a Manfrotto 400, although a bulky one and kind of limited in movements, it's sturdy as hell.. and I'd guess that you can go far beyond 10 kg load capacity.

By the way, any info from Photokina on the new Linhof 'C1-like' head? I'm sooo interested in it.. especially if it doesnt cost as much as C1.

ive had 3 x 058 manfrottos. they are great when they are new, but i find the legs gum up too quick. they dont like dirt, sand and salt water. but the more simple legged models like the 161mk2 can be treated far more ruffly. but the 161mk2 is a monster, and doesn't go very low, and the column doesnt reverse.
i hink i have had all the major tripods in my time, and none are perfect, but the tripod can be the most annoying piece of equipment, so do your research well.

I do use some of them.
They are so cheap, so I gave them to some of my clients (event companies) and they bring them by their own cargo.
Maybe this is a cheap option.
But get a good head from somewhere else...

I am still happy with my Gitzo series 3 and series 5 tripods, i can mount cameras from point and shoot up to large format on them, 18-kg-25kgs are overkills, so i never worry when i load those cameras on those tripods, even the ballhead [RRS BH-55] is sturdy enough to handle the loads.
