Title: upgrade LR to 3 question

If I upgrade to LR3 will it's version of Camera Raw continue to work with my current CS4? Or is Adobe expecting me to upgrade both

Yes.

Minus the lens corrections which will need to be rendered _IN_ Lightroom and not in ACR 5.7.
