Title: An informal speed test
Post by: semillerimages on June 22, 2010, 11:25:30 pm
Hi All,

I just received a new MacBook Pro - 15" i7 2.66GHz with 8 gigs ram and a 500 GB HD (7200rpm) and for the sake of wasting some time I did some informal speed tests against my 2006 dual Opteron 275, 6 gigs ram and windows 7 64bit.

I took 57 Canon 1DsMark2 images and converted in ACR 6.1 and DPP. ACR converted to a 16bit psd file and DPP to a 16bit tif (I realize now I probably should have done tifs on both)

In ACR:
MacBook i7 took ~4:04 to finish
Dual Opteron ~5:13

In DPP
MacBook i7 took ~6:21 to finish
Dual Opteron ~7:49

The Opteron system is 2005 tech, but has served me well for the last 4 years. It's very interesting to see the outcome though considering both systems on both programs hit all 4 cores (4 real cores in the Opteron) to 100%, but the Opteron system was reading from a RAID5 array and then writing to a separate disk (not the C drive).
I kind of complained to a friend last night that the Mac was not significantly faster than the Opteron system and he went on to say "Look at the size difference".

Anyway, a bit of useless information for the net

Cheers!

Just got my new 17 inch i7 MBP on Monday. It's taking some time to move everything from my old laptop, but I plan to do some informal testing of my own. I'll report back here when I am done.
