Title: NEC 2690 and new Macbook Pro

Greetings,

In the market for a new monitor to replace my 5 year old Apple 30-inch cinema display. Reading everything on this forum, it looks like the new NEC 2690 with the SpectraView hardware/software package hits the sweet spot for quality and price. It's now $1170 at B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/599905-REG/NEC_LCD2690W2_BK_SV_MULTISYNC_LCD2690WUXi2_26_w_SOFTWARE.html).

It will be used with a new Macbook Pro 17-inch, using the Minidisplay to DVI adapter. As far as I can tell from the NEC support site (http://www.necdisplay.com/supportcenter/monitors/spectraview2/compatibility/#Mac_OS_version_of_SpectraView_-_Compatibility_Information), this combination should work.

Does anyone have any experience with this combo? Anything I should watch out for?

Also, can I use the calibrator to calibrate the display of the MBP, or will it only work with the NEC monitor?

It looks like the included hardware colorimeter is custom-tweaked for NEC displays, so AFAIK probably won't work with the MBP display.

Custom calibrated color sensor (MDSVSENSOR2)
The NEC/X-rite iOne Display 2-based colorimeter features factory custom calibration for improved color accuracy for NEC wide gamut displays when used with the SpectraView software. A compatible display monitor and SpectraView software must be purchased separately. See the system requirements and compatibility page for a complete list of supported display monitors.

I just went thru the same process as you and ourchased the 2690 because the of the current price reductions.  I did not feel spending more money to another 2% of the color gamut was worth the cost.

I am very happy with the monitor.  I used  my Eye 1 spectrophotometer with the Spectraview sofware to calibrate and it worked just fine.  In the documentation on the website is buried the ability to use this system, but they do not advertise it hoping to get you to spend more.

Just about to recalibrate mine [assuming I ever get OSX to install properly], so do you have the link to this.
