Hi Michael
I have noticed lately that each member has a series of stars as a rating - some people have 1 - some people have 3 etc. I'm just curious to know how this system works?
Also, I have tried on numerous occasions to upload a profile photograph and it constantly comes up with the error message: The upload failed. Please contact a board administrator - any suggestions? I have tried to contact several board administrators in the past but never received a response.
Cheers

Hey Soos, Simon, quit whilst you're ahead: somebody else has one of those things and he looks like a baby!

Simon, they told me that you have to upload from the web. Can't use a photo from your files.

If you're referring to mine, Rob, it's a tar baby (with a manhole cover on the side).
Yes, for an 'avatar' you have to provide a link to an appropriately-sized image elsewhere on the web. No uploads allowed. But if you do one, it runs up the number of hits on your website enormously (every time someone looks at a LuLa Forum page with one of your posts on it.)
As for "stars", they look like squares on my screen, and I haven't noticed more than two. I think it either has to do with how long you've been a member or possibly how many posts you've made. And "group" seems to vary between "beginner", "member", and "regular." The subtle distinctions between "member" and "regular" elude me.

I think it's based on the number of posts you've made. It's really just a recognition of verbosity, an attribute for which my profession equips me admirably.
I remember feeling inordinately proud when I was promoted to regular! I doubt I'll ever reach the dizzy heights of super administrator, though. One of many positions outwith my reach.

I have over 5000 posts, and still am a "regular" with only 2 stars...

It is a rating your fellow forumites bestow upon you. Of course most, as evidenced by this thread, don't know those star even exist.

And the squares are not the same thing as stars. I believe the only way to see the stars is view the member profile.

That is my understanding as well.

I never knew about the stars. I just discovered that you can see them by hovering your mouse over a poster's name and clicking the drop-down arrow.
Curiously, if you find (somewhere under "my controls") the list of the "twenty top posters", you will see that certain old geezers have five stars, including Michael (not that he's an old geezer), Ray, Dark Penguin, Rob C, and yours truly. However, the following all seem to have no stars: JonathanWienke, BernardLanguillier, Mark D Segal, Digitaldog, BJL, francois, JackFlesher, Wolfnowl, and several others. This list includes many of the most knowledgable and informative posters on the list, IMHO.
The "squares" make at least a little bit of sense, but I can't figure out the stars.

... I can't figure out the stars.
My understanding is that to get five stars, all it takes is ONE member to rate you so... or multiple members, each rating you the same. If two members rate you, one with five stars the other with one star, you will then have 3 stars (i.e., the system averages ratings).

That might be something to do with quality rather than quantity?

And here I thought you had steal a tank, fight your way into the secure area of the Liberty City airport (http://gta.wikia.com/Wanted_Level_in_GTA_IV), and then use an automatic weapon to resist arrest to get the 5-star rating. Sheesh...
-
I haven't yet figured out how or where I can give anybody a star.
Maybe I have to go to the LL Store and buy some?

Hehe... I guess soldiers know HOW to attack an airport, and (five star) generals know WHICH airport to attack.

I figured it out (what a waste of time). But I'm not telling.
But I notice that Jonathan now has 5 stars (not to be confused with the two squares).
