Detail on the US release Here Canon Rumours (http://www.canonrumors.com/)

I currently use the 70-200 F4 L IS. If the reviews are positive I may well sell it and upgrade to the new F2.8 lens. The combination of fast (and hopefully sharp) optics and image stabilization is very appealing.

Didn't the original 70-200 f2.8 L IS have both?

If "both" refers to "fast" and "sharp", definitely yes.

You have a point there. With hindsight the F2.8 version might have been a better choice. I chose the F4 because it was a lot smaller, lighter and cheaper, and I already had a 200mm F2.8 and 135mm F2 for the times when I needed speed. I was also swayed by the fact that the F4 version had supposedly superior IS, and was somewhat sharper by some accounts.
If the new F2.8 lens is a significant improvement over the old one, it might be a good excuse to upgrade. The size and weight problem won't go away of course, but may be worth putting up with for the extra flexibility. I'll think about it once I read some decent reviews.

I wasn't trying to be smug! I have the f4 IS and I'm very happy indeed with it.

I am in the market for a 70-200 lens right now, and this will help quite a bit. Not that I'll buy the new one -- but there should be a lot of Mark I models out there for good prices.

Looks like it's more than just a rumor ... it's already on Canon's website as an available model:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controll...p;modelid=19092 (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=19092)

Yeah I didnt say it was a rumour - I said it was on a Canon rumours website. It has been official since the 6th of January - American press release on the Canon Rumours site - Australian press release on my Blog.

For what it's worth, you can already order it from Yodobashi Camera for 283,500 yen.

Too bad I won't be in Japan when it comes out. I'll have to wait and see if I can pick one up from an Australian online retailer for a sane price. Such things are sometimes possible.

I own both the 70-200 f2.8 L IS and new model 70-200 f4 L IS. Both are great lenses, however, I find myself choosing the f4 version all of the time now because it is much lighter and smaller.
That said, I plan on selling my mint condition 70-200 f2.8 L IS lens. I have the original packaging and included carrying case. Anyone want to make me an offer?
Cheers.

The current version is $1700 at Adorama with the rebate offer, good through Saturday. KEH has one used for the same price (hah.) Hmmm, wonder if there will be a glut on the market in a couple of months, as lots of professionals trade in their Mark I's on the Mark II.
When you're ready to sell that, send me an email. I think you still have it from our transaction last summer.
Cheers,
Ken

I've seen it advertised on a German website for €2400 (VAT incuded, around €2000 without tax) and CHF 2850 (VAT included, = $2810) in Switzerland.
