Title: Mission to an orphanage

I spent the last three days on a mission to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic.  I think I got some really good stuff that is going to be helpful in raising awareness of their cause.

Thanks, all - it was an amazing experience and hopefully we made a difference.

Jeremy, what was your mission there?  Were the photos just gravy?  How did you help them?  I always wanted to go help kids like that.  Although they look well cared for and fairly happy.

It was organized by a group called Airline Ambassadors and was sponsored by my son's school.  As my son said after ... most were very happy, but some were very sad.  I've chosen to show smiles ... I could post some stuff that would make you cry ...

We brought supplies - food, clothing, medicine and other essentials and five 1st graders (including my son) down to deliver the aid and spend two days with the children.  The school will be continuing the relationship and visiting on a regular basis.

While there, we also re-built their wooden playground because on the first day it looked like it was gonna fall over.

I was a donor, parent, mission volunteer and official mission photographer.

Here's one ... this little girl was crying and crying and I couldn't comfort her ... fortunately, we had a nurse with us and she examined her and found the source of her pain - a horrible infection on her foot ...

Poor baby.  She still looks fairly healthy and untraumatized.  How do the buildings and the terrain look?  Some indoor shots of where they eat and sleep.  Their pantry.  That would be interesting.

These are the lucky ones ... they made it to the orphanage.  The place is very clean and well-run.

While we were there, the school and the dorm were empty, as all the children were out playing in the yard the whole time ... I debated going in a shooting the empty buildings, but in the end I stayed with the kids the whole time ... there was a tour, but I missed it.  

I'll be going back ... so there will be more chances to get other kinds of images.

It was shot with the Nikkor 50mm/1.4 AF-D at f/5.6 and 1/250th @ ISO 250 with a Nikon D700.
