Some kind of dragon fly?

"Insect" certainly does it. Let's hope Mike can pin it down.

Nice photo!

I don't really know insects very well but maybe a unicorn darner?

Well, it's definitely a darner; assuming it was taken in England, I can't help much beyond that.  I'd suggest you post it at: http://bugguide.net/node/view/15740 (http://bugguide.net/node/view/15740)

Jeremy

definitely "Aeshna"

Probably Affinis, Mixta or Imperator. Can't say more without other angles and an eventual picture of its anal triangle (seriously)

If you have other images, have a look here

Thank you, Ed!

Mike, the site you suggested only handles insects in North America and this was taken in England, in July a few years ago. I found a site in England called Ask A Biologist and posted a link to the shot there: their comments are here (http://www.askabiologist.org.uk/punbb/viewtopic.php?pid=7434#p7434): they didn't find it easy to identify either. Sadly, I can't find a way to post a follow-up there so I can't tell them the date. I did send an email to the dragonfly society, but they've not replied as yet.

So, there we are. Pierre, I suspect Aeshna affinis is most likely. Next time I see one, I'll make sure I get its anus in shot   .

And be sure to ask it for an I.D.
