Title: x-rite passport Lightroom glitch with Panasonic GF1
Post by: photodan on November 22, 2009, 03:35:29 pm
I have the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport and am using it with Lightroom 2.5 and 3Beta, with raw files shot from a Panasonic GF1. I have been able to create a camera profile via using a process of converting raw photos of the Passport target to DNG and then dragging the DNGs into the ColorChecker software, but ONLY IF within the Lightroom export to DNG I select the Compatibility drop-down to Camera Raw 4.6 and later and not the more recent selection of Camera Raw 5.4 and later. I don't have other cameras right now, so I only know that this is a problem with my Panasonic GF1.

The latter (5.4 and later) exports ok it seems, but when I drag the file into the ColorChecker software it shows  Auto-Cropping Error dialog box saying it's not a valid DNG.  Using a camera raw 4.6 and later compatibility dng exported file works fine however.

In addition, if I try exporting the same raw file (actually, any raw file from the GF1 - I've tried several different shots) via the Lightroom X-Rite ColorChecker export preset, it doesn't work at all. It's starts processing and after a few seconds an error message pops up that ends with '...use photoIDExportSequence instead'. The Lightroom Export Plug-in Manager says that there is a problem with the xrite plug in (some errors encountered). The version of the plugin is 1.0.0.1.

Both errors happen with LR 2.5 and 3Beta. I can find only one version of the ColorChecker software - 1.0 (I assume the version on my CD is the same as that on the Xrite website).

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?  I've done some checking via search on this forum and on the net generally but haven't found anything yet.  I see no reference to needing to select a version of compatibility in LR (4.6 or lower) in any of the documentation or reviews. However, I suppose I could have overlooked it I suppose.

Thank you.
Dan

Same thing happens with the EP-1. Profiles are only created when files are converted with ACR 4.6.
This only happens with the kit lenses. Regular four thirds lenses, and lenses which use an adaptor work as expected.
This seems to be to do with changes to the dng format recently -- such as the software corrections for lens abberations.

Thanks very much Robert  - now I know that it is happening not just to me -that there is not something wrong with my software set-up. I had sent an email to Xrite some time ago but haven't received a response (not a biggie since it's not a showstopper problem etc.). It will be interesting to see if Xrite or Adobe make changes in the future to get around this problem, as I would imagine that as more cameras utilize the new dng format capabilities, then more users would be affected in a similar way.

Dan, I believe the ColorChecker Passport software supports DNG through versions 1.2 of the DNG spec. The DNG files you are creating with the 5.4-and-later option in DNG Converter, CR plug-in, or LR for the GF1 are using the newer DNG 1.3 version. That is likely why they are not being read by the Passport software. The same is true of the DNG Profile Editor (current version on Adobe Labs supports DNG version 1.2 and earlier).

Thanks Eric -- as we suspected.
I've also sent an email to x-rite - no answer yet.
