Title: Epson 2000 digital wallet
Post by: on January 22, 2005, 10:33:00 pm
The P2000 is a hard disk with a USB 2.0 connection. To transfer to another device requires that that device be intellegent, which most burners aren't. You'll likely need a laptop for this.

I too, am curious to learn about Michael's experience with the P2000 in the field, particularly with the 1Ds Mark II. When I read the specifications for the P2000 it seemed to be limited in the range of cameras it worked with, the 1Ds Mark II was not mentioned.

One more thing... in my earlier research into the compatability of the P2000 and the RAW files from the Canon 1Ds, I contacted Epson directly. I have cut-and-pasted the exchange below in case it helps anyone out. NOTE: This info is current as of 12/15/04.

Dear Epson-

I am looking for answers to 2 specific questions regarding your p-2000 image storage system. After poring through many reviews, I am having trouble determining whether the p-2000 supports RAW files from the Canon 1Ds. Some places say it will and others do not say anything at all about that particular DSLR. Second, I have read that the p-2000 has a file size
limit of 8.9MP? is this true? If so, then my 11MP 1Ds will produce files that are too large to be used with the p-2000. Can you get back to me with information on these two questions and on the compatibility of the p-2000 and Canon 1Ds in general?

Thanks - Harrison
==============================================

Here is all the current information, at the present the 1Ds's raw files are not known to display on the P-2000, but can be stored as can other photo files:

Supported File Formats

The P-2000 supports non-progressive JPEG files, and
RAW files from the following digital SLR cameras:
Epson R-D1; Nikon® D100, D1H, D2H, and D70;
Canon® EOS-D30, EOS-D60, EOS-D10D, Kiss
Digital, and EOS-1D Mark II.

Image files Extension Details
JPEG .jpg
.jpeg
Minimum size: 160 × 120 pixels
Maximum size: 8.9 megapixels
Maximum image aspect ratio: 8:1
RAW .nef
.crw
.erf
.cr2
JPEG data stored in the header of
RAW files is displayed.
25
Note:
RAW files do not support direct printing, rotation, zooming,
or slide shows.

Any file can be saved, however if a RAW file it may not be displayed on the P-2000 if not one of the above, as well files over 8.9 Megabytes will not be displayed but can also be
stored.

It is possible that a future update may allow functionality of this camera with RAW, however until we have no way of knowing, if and when something is released it will be posted on our web site.

Thank you again for contacting Epson.

Yes, the last post hit it on the head re file-size limitations I believe. When you look at the specifications on Adorama.com they indicate a limit of 8.9 Meg per image, but when you read the specs from Epson that limitation is specific to the size of a JPEG file, there is no limit mentioned for RAW files. So I assume Michael found that he could store his images from the 1Ds Mark II, and could view the JPEG's made simultaneously with his RAW files, or perhaps even (Michael might answer this!) the JPEG header on the RAW files. (I don't exactly know what that term means, but I have read it; I am still waiting for delivery of my very first digital - a 1Ds Mark II).

The jpeg embeded in a RAW file (even a 16.7mp RAW) is not 8mp in size and so the P-2000 would display it.

michael,

Does your estimated 13 1GB card transfers you mentioned in the review still hold up after further use?

Thanks, Michael, for clearing some of this up - namely that "the P2000 displays raw files from the 1Ds MKII, but not  the original 1Ds." However, an earlier thread in the post mentions that the P2000 will display "the JPEG header on the RAW files." I too have read about this but am not aware of how it works. So to get to the bottom line... I know that the P2000 will store the RAW files from my 1Ds. But will I be able to view any kind if image (even the JPEG header on the RAW files) from the 1Ds on the P2000 even if it is not full screen or zoomable?

Sorry for the persistence here but I want to make sure that I am fully aware of all the compatability issues between the P2000 and my 1Ds. The per-GB cost of storage is very attractive but unless I can utilize the features of the P2000 it is no better than an external drive. In the meantime, I think I'll follow up on my email to Epson to see if they have any plans to upgrade the firmware to supprt RAW files from the 1Ds.

Thanks - Harrison

This product sounds very appealing to me since I am tired of lugging around a notebook. However I would like to know a couple of things. Is it possible to backup to an external HD and/or CD Burner WITHOUT a notebook?  To have two copies just in case.

I'm glad Sergio opened this topic. Michael, did the Epson P-2000 live up to your expectations on the Bangladesh trip? I have been looking for one everywhre but they seem to be out of stock until the end of February. I still use my e-pad and have had no major setbacks with it. Is the Epson a much better choice? Thanks for a reply when you get the chance.

I'd love a device like this for portable in-the-field storage. However, I was under the impression that the P2000 was not compatible with files over 8.9 MB in size. It will store them, but will not display them on the screen. Furthermore, the 1Ds is not listed as a supported DSLR in any documentation that I can find online. Yet it appears from the Bangladesh article that Michael used one. Although, the text reads that he brought a 1Ds MarkII and many of the photo captions say that a 1Ds was used. Could this just be an omission and a 1Ds MarkII was really used? He clearly states in the article that he flipped through the images on the P2000 so what gives? Both the 1Ds and the 1Ds MarkII yield files larger than 8.9 MB so how did you get around this, Michael?

Thanks - Harrison

It is partially compatible with Canon 1DsII raw files.  Partially being it will display them fullscreen, but you cannot zoom in as you can with a jpeg or tiff.  regardless, the image displaed is more than adequate to make cursory edit decisions with.

I understand it may not display 1Ds raw files, though I have not personally tried it.

this is a GREAT tool. On a scale of 1-10 I'd rate it a solid 8.5/9. Before this, the next best storage device I tested got a 6.5 by comparison.

Once again:

THE P2000 WILL DISPLAY THE 1DsII RAW FILE FULLSCREEN.

That includes a 24MB one.

As mentioned by others, the P2000 displays raw files from the 1Ds MKII, but not  the original 1Ds.

For cameras whose raw files it doesn't support shooting combined jpgs and raw is one solution. In any event, the battery life is superb, and the screen is the best currently on the market.

More or less. It's a matter of continious use, temperature and the time between transfers for the battery to "catch its breath".

If I remember correctly Phil Askey got about 10 or 11 when he did his test, so that's about what one can expect.

I own both a 1Ds and an Epson P-2000. The facts are: (1) it does not display a 1Ds RAW TIF. (2) it does store 1Ds RAW TIFs. (3) Set the 1Ds to RAW+JPG (using the lowest res JPG the 1Ds offers) and it does show the JPG version superbly. The cost of this of course is about a 15% reduction in the number of RAW files you can store on a memory card, and the nuissance of deleting the JPGs if you have no other use for them.

I have also contacted Epson about this question. They asked me to verify whether in fact the 1Ds RAW files embed a JPG and if so whether it gets saved with the RAW file when exported. So I called Canon today, explained exactly why I was asking, and Canon told me (1) the 1Ds RAW files DO NOT have embedded JPGs - and the bit of data used to display the RAW image on the camera screen is not exported with the RAW file when it leaves the camera. I have relayed this back to Epson today asking them whether they intend to produce firmware that will enable display of RAW TIF and I am waiting to hear back. I suggested to them there may be quite a few 1Ds owners with an interest in this.

So for the time being the only solution for 1Ds owners who want the tremendous advantages the P-2000 offers (storage capacity, battery endurance and screen quality) is to shoot RAW+JPG. I think it is worthwhile.

Greetings:

Seems I'm the newest member on this list, although I really enjoy reading the luminous-landscape site.  Michael, I have a question that is partly related to the Epson P-2000.  I've read your review of it today, but I was wondering if you have any knowledge/ experience with the VOSONIC X'S-DRIVE SUPER VP6210 (http://www.xs-drive.com/xsdrivesuper/index.htm)  On one hand, the Epson has a better/ larger screen, but on the other hand the Vosonic is capable of using any 2.5" hard drive (presumably including the new Toshiba 100GB drive).  The transfer times seem to be compatible; the Vosonic website lists the power on time as 6 hours/ 3 hours with the screen on.  Both drives have interchangeable batteries - the Vosonic has an optional 4-AA battery adapter as well.

If anyone has any good/ bad experiences, I'd appreciate hearing about them.

Thanks,
Mike.
