Title: Small portable tethering unit for field work?..anything yet?
Post by: marcwilson on October 21, 2009, 04:08:21 am
Hi,

In case I have missed it somewhere has anyone come up with any small portable tethering solution yet?

I don't need camera control, but just wish to be able to preview my shot images on a larger screen than my 5d whilst on location where a laptop is not an option.

Usb wire is fine as this is for tripod work so the 'unit' can be connected and attached to tripod also.

Cheers.

if USB is fine, and you don't need firewire, then you are spoilt for choice really.
there's dozens of small form factors notebooks out there for windows.
its just how much you want to spend, what size you tolerate, and what power/other features you want

Netbooks are a start, but you probably want something more powerful and with a better screen.
the was an old IBM/Lenovo think pad that was a convertible, (tablet type) which is very nice, and often on eBay cheaply.
you can fold the screen back on itself and everything is very neat.

Anyone find a tethering App to use an iPhone with a Canon EOS?  Ive heard rumors that they exist, but have yet to find one.

I haven't seen or tried one, but the newest Epson photoviewers apparently can tether:

Brilliant.

I have wondered for a while why these devices could not do this.
It will be interesting to see the speed of shutter firing to on the screen for shooting raw files..and hopefully they will provide support for my original 5ds also...

I see the rob galbraithe article is over 2 months old..I am surprised more has not been made of this as it does seem to provide a good solution.

Depends how critical the display has to be. If you need to check for sharpness colour balance etc., then Michael did a short video about a little unit he picked up recently. It's somewhere on this site. Personally, I just check for composition etc., and use a Sony portable DVD player which shows the camera rear screen JPEG via USB. Works fine and is cheap.

don't want anything that needs to sit flat, has a keyboard and screen etc as that is too cluncky, fragile. If i have room for that then I'm using my laptop anyway.

This is for shoots where there is no room / possibility for that so the viewer needs to simply hang odd the tripod so I can check the image on the larger than camera screen.
It needs to be simple, flat, screen only, just to check composition, lines, ...basically just an enlarged lcd.

the portable dvd player sound like it could work, what does set up look like?

I'll look up what michael found and research the epson a bit more.

I just attach a Bogen MagicArm to my tripod and clamp the DVD viewer to the plate.

Marc,
I have been searching for a similar solution.  Most of the time a laptop is overkill for me and the software bogs down when shooting a lot of frames quickly.  Most of the time I just need a larger lcd screen to look at.  Has anyone used one of those inexpensive 7 or 9" lcd tv .  They have an A/V connection port.  They are only around 100usd.  Worth trying??  Same screen as a small dvd player or is the resolution different?

Best,
Frank Poole

If you can wait a little longer, it looks like the Apple tablet is close to being released. Imagine the possibilities of tethering, editing, delivering online and then surfing when you are finished. It sounds like the display will be about 10" which would be highly portable. The only thing that concerns me is the enclosed battery if they follow the MBP line.

dont hold your breath.
I'd put money on the Apple Slate not having a Firewire port (or card slot to add one). it will be very stripped down and 'cost effective' for apple.
would be delighted to be wrong, but... the latest $1000 macbook doesn't have either option, so why would a $499 Tablet?
