I'm concerned about space needs for either of these printers. This is where my printer must go. (old Epson 1280 shown) It is a 27" deep, built in desk in a corner with a 12" deep, wall mounted book shelf 20" above the desk. Can the 3800 and the 4880 work in this space? The stated depths of the 3800 and 4880, respectively are 15" and 30". Are they really being measured in the same way? is the 30" depth maybe including trays or paper support arms? I will probably use only sheet paper, not roll stock. Will they work in my available space?

Not even close. I had to purchase a new desk for my man cave just for this printer. Its a lot larger than I thought. See here:

I now have one of each sitting in my "rat hole"....The 3800/3880 would be OK unless you will be using 17 x 22" paper, then the top shelf arrangement might be a problem. You might look at a separate table for the printer, if you have the room. I just got the 4880 today and it is really nice and the price and free shipping was unbelievable. The only down side to the 4880 is if you want to switch between "glossy" and "matt", the black ink change is a PITA and very wasteful of ink, ($$$$). I should mention that the "actual" base of the 4880 that will be sitting on the table is 17" x 26", the remainder of the 30" x 33" is overhang.

The 4880 will work fine there if you don't mind the paper tray and (if you are using them)large ink cartridges hanging over the edge. I have mine on a 27" deep counter and the paper tray (collapsed) sticks out about 8", more when expanded.
