Title: Anyone test the new Canon 100 vs. the old 100 macro?
Post by: spotmeter on September 22, 2009, 10:32:21 pm
The MTF curves of the new Canon 100 macro look much better than the old one.

Has anyone tested and compared the new lens to the old model?

I have an old 100mm macro that I bought over ten years ago which has always been stunningly sharp at all apertures. I am not sure what graphs you have seen but I wouldn't worry either way. A friend has the newer one that I looked at recently and we didn't do any kind of side by side test, but in a nutshell his had faster focus but mine felt much better made. New one or old one I am sure it's a great lens.

Try Photozone. They use Imatest to generate MTF plots, so all the usual caveats apply, and they do not use identical cameras, but you can perhaps still glean something of value.

Two pages of discussion (http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=38361&hl=) but not a real scientific comparative test as far as see.
