Title: Canon 17-55 2.8 IS & filters

Are "slim" (i.e. non front-threaded) filters necessary to avoid vignetting at the wide end of this lens?

Two shots of white wall - CANON 40D using 17-55/2.8 @ f3.5 1:50/sec for you to compare @ 17 mm

No attached filter:

With filter attached (screwed in filter) - B+W filter approx 4 to 4.5 mm thick (standard filter thickness):
