Our CS4 has worked like a charm for the last few months.
A few days ago however, I began having problems.
I open a file in CS4, but as soon as I go to perform any adj. on it or try to save it, I get an error message that Photoshop must close.
I have to re-open the programme, then the same thing happens.
We still have CS2, so when I open CS2 and work on the same file, all is OK.
My question--what's going on with CS4 (Windows XP) and how do I get it to respond as it used to?
Any help will be appreciated.

Troubleshooting 101, trash your Photoshop preferences (restart holding Control/Alt/Shift and say yes).
If that helps resolve the issue, reset your prefs the way you want them...f not, then you'll need to track down what EXACTLY you have done to the hardware and system since Photoshop was stable and report back.

Did you transfer any plug-ins from CS2 to CS4 by just copying them from the CS2 directory to the CS4 directory, and did your problems start shortly after that? If so, that's likely the cause of your problem. For CS to work properly, you need to reinstall them for CS4 just like you did for CS2, not just copy them over (as a number of us here have already found out by trial and error...).

I have a number of plugins that go way back, which I have no install programs for, so I just placed them in the Plugins folder, with no problems. Ironically, the newest plugins I have are the latest NIK software, which does install itself into CS4; if I view many filter options while in, for example, Color Efex 3, I sometimes get blown out of CS4 and lose a lot of work.

Have you tried updating Color Efex 3? This was a known issue way back when...and has since been fixed.

I've got the latest upgrade of all the NIK stuff. Sometimes there is no problem for days, and then it happens more and more frequently. A reboot seems to help.

Thanks to all for your positive responses to my query.
It was actually my sharp-eyed wife who solved the issue.
I always open my files as TIFFs in CS4. For some reason, the format box defaulted to "all formats" without me noticing it.
Thus, when I opened a file, it was as "all formats" and this froze things up.
When K. noticed this and simply changed the format back to TIFF, all was well again, and TIFF seems to be "sticky", so all files that are now opened in CS4 automatically are opened as TIFFS--until it defaults again, if it does...
But then, I'll know how to deal with it.
