Title: Polarizer recommendation...?

Hi there,

I need to get a new polarizer for use in nature photography.  I am thinking of the Singh Ray LB Warming Polarizer or the new Hoya HD polarizer (both would be thin mount for wide angle zooms).  Both are super expensive and highly regarded.  I've heard that the Hoya is really really easy to clean.

Any recommendations either way?

  I hate to make your decision more confusing, but I'd look at Nikon Polarizer II's.  Slim mount, multicoated on inside and outside, and, like the Singh Rays, they let in more light than the other brands and don't cool the color too much.  Nikon polarizers are all I use now, and I don't even shoot Nikon cameras!

Singh Ray = quality!


I have heard good things about the Hoya as well so it looks like you just have to pick if you want warming or not...

Do you think it is worth having warming in a polarizer when you get easily repliace using white balance in post processing?

With digital, there is no advantage to a warming filter, since you can easily set white balance in post.

I personally use B+W with good results, haven't tried Singh-Ray.

I have polarizer but i rarely use them, and to add a warming to it, it is too much, some people love to have polarizer and warming or even ND on one filter, fine lazy people, but really i have fun to use some filters for certain conditions, and if some prefer warming scenes, some prefer cooler tones, and as it said, with digital workflow many things can be done, warning or some color effects can be done just ND or Polarizer effects even can be done somehow i can use filters about that only, no need to have 10 filters with me also no need to have 1 filter which has 5 effects to do at the same time.

Add my vote for B+W.

I have both the regular circular polarizer and the thin version. I use the thin version on my Canon 16-35 MkII lens to avoid vignetting. The only problem with the thin version is that the regular Canon lens cap won't work as there is not sufficient depth to the ring to allow the lens cap to "grab" the filter.

You pay more, but the quality is worth it.

Add my vote for Singh-Ray. I also have both slim and standard filters.

Pleaae, note that Singh-Ray offers new Neutral LB polarizer filters (ie no warming effect).
