Title: Printing with 3800 from Lightroom with Vista
Post by: AndyS on April 12, 2009, 03:37:39 am
Hi,

I have decided to start doing my own printing and have an Epson 3800 on order, which will be being connected to a Vista 64bit machine.

Ideally I would like to print directly from Lightroom (2.3), and am trying to gauge how many people are having issues with this particular combination (dark prints, double profiling etc). Have been hunting around on the web, but responses seem to be mixed, or lacking a description of what operating system is being used.

Would be really interested to hear from people who are using a 3800, LR2.3 and Vista 64.

Thanks,

Sorry I only have 2 out of three. Lightroom 2.3 and Epsons 3800 and 7900. Before I got my Mac Pro I printed on the 3800,Lightroom 2.0 and a pc. Everything worked fine on the pc,no complaints. Out of the Mac Pro I get excellent prints, again no problems.

See this page:

Eric Chan's Epson 3800 Site (http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/index.html)

Eric specifically addresses a printing workflow from Lightroom.  His page is an excellent resource!

By the way, I print from Lightroom 2.3 to an Epson 3800 from XP.  I dumped Vista, but not because of my printing workflow.  When I was running Vista, I had no problems.  The keys to predictable prints are monitor calibration, good ICC profiles, and soft-proofing in Photoshop before printing from Lightroom.

I have tried printing directly from Lightroom 2.3 on a 3800 from Vista 64bit and have been disappointed. Prints were consistently too dark and less predictible that with my workflow in Photoshop. So I've gone back to softproofing and printing from Photoshop.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies - especially the link to Eric's site - what a great resource that is!

Am pleased to say that I can answer my own question now - 3800 arrived this morning, and have been delighted by the results so far. Have run a few prints off on Photo Rag Baryta and couldn't be happier.

Touch wood, but results direct from Lightroom seem to be pretty much spot on - had to turn down the brightness on my monitor a bit, and re-profiled it prior to printing.

Cheers,
